#PAR and Rotoscop
13 messages in this thread
I need help with rotoscoping video on 3d studio using the PAR. My material will
show the first frame of the animation but will not advance to the next
sequential frame. I tried every config on the par.ixp to no avail. Any advice/
quick fixes would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Jeff
Jeff,
you need to use the dpspar.pxp and activate the targa, filename options. Make
an .ifl of the incremental frames you need and use it for the material. The
utility that comes with 3ds called makeifl.exe is perfect for creating an .ifl
of the correct sequence.
Martin,
Thanks for the quick response. I didn't know anything about .ifl . I did work
around it by changing the video filename on the par from ship.ani to
ship0000.ani and changing my texture map to ship*.tga. It seems to be working
I think. I am going to check out makeifl.exe. Is this utility in v.3 or just
v.4?
Again thank you and have a good holiday.

both..
Jeff,

"not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent at this juncture" [spoken in a George
Bush voice]. You need the .ifl as others have said.

I think it came with r3, but has been available in the libs here for some time
(makifl.zip).

you're welcome and Merry Xmas.
You MUST use an IFL. You MUST name the Par ani file four letters followed by
four zeros as in ABCD0000.ani. You MUST have the ifl and the par directory
listed in your map paths. You Must launch the DPSPAR.PXP and specify targa and
file. That should do it.
Don,
Thanks for the speedy advice. I did rename par file from ship.ani to
ship0000.ani and changed texture map to ship*.tga . This seems to work.
I am going to look at .ifl files.
I appreciate your help, Thanks again and Happy Holidays.

This will NOT work properly – you will get every other frame from the PAR
mapped to your object in 3DS. You will have to use an IFL to get it working
consistently!

<<you will have to use an IFL>> oopsie, posted to Jeff too soon! So seldom, an
easy fix doth fall. Oh well, making .IFLs does give one a sense of … uh….
ummm… sense. Jeffrey
<<ship.ani to ship0000.ani>> Jeff, that's interesting. Although .IFLs
are often the way to go, it's also great to just use the FILE*.tga
where possible. I did not know about this renaming of an .ANI file as
the solution to incrementals. Let me know how the scene turned out,
please. Jeffrey

Wow, talk about a black and white answer! :^)
Happy Holidays, we'll be spending Christmas near you in Lakeland near Orlando
with Susan's folks. So close, yet so far away! Merry, Merry!

You should see the black and white answers I've been giving up on the broadcast
pro's forum. They just started a discussion of video resolution and some of
the obviously non-professionals are so off base on this. <G>
Hope you enjoy your stay in Lakeland. We were planning to get down to
Disney over the holidays but it looks like I'll be in post editing
for the next 7 days straight, including Christmas. We got an early
60 minute slot contract on one of the networks (cable) to fill and
our schedule is being moved up by two months. This is the project
that had all the rotoscoping with the PAR in it.
Did you finally get your editor? We ordered our two source decks this
week to round out our betacam SP suite for A/B roll.
Don:
Sounds like you are pretty busy! Make sure you let us know when your program
will air!
I've been holding off on the editor, we are doing a few CD-ROM games right now
and have no need for it at this moment, besides, I'm waiting for you to check
it out in detail and go with your suggestions! :^)
Happy New Year!
