Do you know of someone that might have some source code to write a minimal 3DS file? I could plug it into Blob Sculptor.

I tried the RAW->3DS and it worked fine. It was MUCH faster loading into 3DS. I'm not the least concerned with the file size, only mentioning it to get sympathy from anyone who has loaded DXF's before. <g> The same file written as a RAW was processed in a fraction of the time it took to load the DXF into 3DS. Thank you for the hint!

We have a Converter for RAW format in InterChange, too.
