Just got off the phone with Jim Casper at MOTOROLA to ask about the rumors floating around about the 68060 being abandoned. He's says it absolutely false, it's going to ship shortly (he said first Q, then maybe as early as a month- he's the '040 guy filling in for the vacationing '060 guy)- He was a little surprised to hear about the rumor (doesn't know many Amigans I guess) but was very excited about the '060 . He said they plan to do the same version-stuff as with the '040- EC , no FPU etc. He also said they have a way to double or triple the performance of the current 50Mhz model- He also said they are stopping here, at 060, but this technique to increase its productivity would be like an '080 (a 68060+ is what he called it) Anyway, the feeling I got from talking to him was that they have every intention of selling the '060 and expanding it- but their main efforts will remanin PowerPC. I can't wait to get my TransWarpEngine!!

As I've said before, desktop systems have never been a majority of the 68k l ne. The demand from embedded systems people has always driven it. It conti ues to, and it doesn't dry up just because desktop people can go risc. Embe ded people have good reasons to want to stay with 68k for quite a while to c me.
