#Defraging Amiga Drive

First off, did you get my message about the PAL conversion? After I left it I
thought that it might be too commercial and maybe the SYSOP would pull it off
the system. I probably should have sent it via private E-Mail.
Now for the question concerning my subject. Does an Amiga hard drive get
fragmented like a PC drive does? I seem to remember asking a dealer about this
and if I need to purchase a defragging program and was told that the Amiga does
this automatically. Is this true, or do you need to run a program every so
often?

Yes, the Amiga disk devices do get fragmented, but it takes time to notice
it. And when you do, there are a few defrag utils available as shareware
as well as commercial. Defragged hard disk performance is most noticably
improved when you set up to play anims from them in realtime. Read delays
from the hard disks are greatly reduced after a treatment, as you know.

As Vance pointed out, it does take a while but the Amiga certainly doesn't do
it "automatically."
I have been very happy using Ami-Back Tools for defragging. Tools also includes
an undelete module and some other disk utilities-it's the closest I've seen to
Norton on the Amiga.

Yes, I got your post about the conversion, and am passing it on to the person

In addition to Vance's suggestion of B.A.D., there's also (commercially)
AMi-Back Tools and QuarterBack Tools.
I personally use Ami-Back Tools since you can specify three "intensities"
of disk optimization, and because I have never lost any data with it.
Heck, it even kept everything after a power failure during an optimize.

A shareware tool called ReOrg is great for defragging my 4000. B.A.D. doesn't
work for me.
