Andrew, > (Duotones are) something that could be done with IM and OpalPaint Actually, just ole Imagemaster will do. I'm more than happy to share this: I consider it my best discovery yet. Load an image into Imagemaster. Use Standard Adj/Luma to turn it into a greyscale. Go to the Paint/Palette screen. Unless you changed the palette, the screen is set up for an instant greyscale palette: just click on Spread. Change the color space to HSV. Now comes the fun part: pick a midtone, like color 128, click and give it a saturation of, say, 64 and a hue of 16. Then spread from color 112 to 128, and 128 to 144. You've progressively added color to the middle area of a greyscale, without disturbing the brightness values. Now add more tones to your palette: set color 64 to hue=0 and sat=64; spread from color 48 to 64, and from 64 to 80. Then set color 192 to hue=32 and sat=64, and spread from color 176 to 192, and 192 to 208. Exit back to the main menu, select the entire image, and select Process/Special FX/Map to Palette. Presto! Your image has gained subdued colors in certain ranges. The key is really to keep saturation levels low. I normally use this technique with only one hue, placed at color 128 in the palette; I then spread from color 0 to 128, and 128 to 255. The result is a single-hue image, but saturation drops to zero at the ends of the palette, so blacks are pure black and whites are pure white. Blaq! Blaq!
