Networking Question?
4 messages in this thread
Hi.
I want to use Windows for Workgroups networks facilities with 3DS network
rendering. My problem is that the "net" command can only be used in MS-DOS as
a client. I want to be able to share resources while I'm in MS-DOS (not inside
windows). Is this possible? Where can I find a network server that
that will share resources in DOS the same way as in Windows mode?
I don't want to run 3DS inside windows, but I want to be able to connect dos
with Windows.
I'm using right now Novell Lite v. 1.1 but I don't want to use it any more.
I have 6 machines in my network.
Thanks in advance,

With WFW at least one machineneeds to be running the GUI in a server mode, and
the other machines can attach to that machine as clients.
The DOS version of the WFW netwroking software lets you run the server in DOS
as well.
Novell lite should work fine for you. It has been tested many times. Are you
having problems? We can try to help you work them out.

Hello,
Sorry for jumping in this thread. But I suppose you had some questions about
WFW. You can have all DOS machines in the network by using a slightly different
product from Microsoft: Workgroup Add-On for MS-DOS v3.11. This product has all
the network functionality of WFW v3.11 but without a GUI environment. I used it
for a few months. It works well but the file transfer is as always with
peer-to-peer network very slow. I just changed yesterday to a true client and
server network with Workgroup Add-on v3.11 for MS-DOS as clients and Windows
NTv3.5 server version as ser- ver. This works very good and very performant.

I think that the Workgroups for DOS add-in package from MS will do what you
want. (ie. share DOS resources to either Windows or DOS clients) I am using
this and it works okay for a limited number of servers.
I am concerned about trying to use this environment for 3DS
"scheduled" rendering, because there does not appear to be a(n easy) way to
synchronize the "time functions" of network nodes. Maybe I am missing
something, if someone out there knows how to do this in the Workgroups for DOS
add-on, I would appreciate the input. I know that Artisofts Lantasti can sync.
network time, but I don't want to add yet another piece of network software.
