#Should Hobbyist Upgrade?

I got a notice from Manx which says I can upgrade to Aztec 5.0…….for
$75. I'm not a developer, just a recreational >dinker< :). What do I get
with the upgrade, and any thoughts as to whether it's worth it??? Thanks in
advance…….WW
It's hard to say whether or not you should upgrade. I've found several
bugs in 5.0a, so it may be better to wait awhile. On the other hand, I
value ANSI compatibility, and find function prototypes almost essential. If
you don't mind putting up with a few bugs, I'd say it's worth while getting
the upgrade. Hopefully Manx will send out free patches to mend the bugs as
Lattice has done with their 5.0 release.
I'm not a Manx user, so this is just a philosophical comment, but, it's
been my experience that if you intend to continue using a product at all,
it's a very good idea to keep up with the current releases. You will, at
some point, run into something in your version that gives you trouble, and,
since the work-arounds for older versions tend to be forgotten very
quickly, about the only help you'll get is to suggest that you upgrade to
the current version. Also, my experience with all types of software
providers has been that their first response to any problem you're having
(whether it's a legitimate response or not) is to tell you that you have to
upgrade to the current version of the software and then ask again if you're
still having the problem. Just a thought. 8)
