Leah; First: XModem, YModem, and ZModem are transfer protocols and not modem types. The applied engineering modem is likely to be what is loosely called a Hayes compatible modem. There are two file transfer protocols that cover about 99% of all dial in computers and these are XModem and Kermit. The others, such as ZModem, CIS-B, and the like are all protocols with feature enhancements including such things as greater transfer speeds. Second: A protocol transfer such a XModem is ususally used for binary type files (program executables, graphics images, and many data files). A protocol can be used for transfers of ASCII files also and indeed most of us do use a protocol transfer for any file transfers. The protocol transfer ensures that noise "hits" on the telephone line do not alter the file contents. Also, it is usually easier to remember how to do a protocol transfer than how to do a straight ASCII transfer. I don't know anything about the Baud Bandit so can't help specifically with that program. A great deal of additional information on file transfering is available in the libraries. Look in AMIGAUSER Library 2 (AmigaForum Help) and Library 5 (Communications). Also, feel free to ask more questions….. I am sure that there are user on the forums that do use Baud Bandit. BTW, the forum does have a full name policy. Please type "OPT" at the forum prompt, "NAME" at the options prompt, and enter your full name. Millions of bytes of files are transfered every day by amiga users, so rest assured that with specific questions concerning problems that you are having, you will get the answers that will enable you to use file transfer protocols. ,bill

If you take a look at the Baud Bandit documentation, I'm sure there is a section that discusses how to set up the program to upload/download programs using one of the protocols you mentioned (xmodem, ymodem or zmodem). The best one to use here on CompuServe is CIS B+ protocol. It's very fast. You can find VIRUSX in our libraries here. If there is any program you wish to find, you can use the file finder (type: GO AMG at any forum prompt). Also, CompuServe has a Practice Forum (type: GO PRACTICE) where you can try uploading and downloading programs for FREE until you get used to using your software and using CompuServe. Steve

Leah, B4 you initiate the upload with BaudBandit click over the word "modem" in the menu bar. Make sure that the transfer protocol you are going to use (i.e. XModem or YModem) is set properly. See where it says Protocol in the window? Click there and BB will step through the options. If you are going to use CIS B+ there is an on/off option in the lower portion of the same "modem" window. Put your file in ram: (thats the default) and when you click on u/l in the menu bar select that file from the requester and press "return". The upload should proceed on it's own. Remember to follow Compuserves instructions B4 you start the upload. 🙂 Vic.

Leah, Welcome to our forum. We'll be glad to help you, but I would suggest that you save some money by practicing uploads, downloads, etc., in the practice forum which is free of connect-time charges. Anything you learn to do there will work on any forum on CIS, and you are learning without running up your bill! To get there, type GO PRACTICE at any ! prompt. Now, for some of the problems you mentioned: XModem, YModem, and Zmodem are 'protocols' that can be used with any physical modem. A protocol is to modems something like a language is to us. Both modems must be using the same protocol in order for them to speak to each other. So, you select the protocol you want to use on your computer, and you also tell CIS to use the same protocol. When you start to upload a file, CIS will ask you which protocol to use. Be sure it is the same one you selected from Baud Bandit. You can use any of the protocols to send either ASCII (text) files, or binary – anything else. I don't know if you are wanting to send a message to a forum, such as this one, or if you want to send a message in easyplex. If it is in Easyplex, the menu offers choice 3, UPLOAD a message. From there, the menus will tell you want to do next. After you have sent the message to CIS, they will ask you what you want to do with it, and you will say SEND, and type the name and ID number of the person who is to receive it. I would suggest that, for CompuServe, you go to Library 17 of AmigaUser, and download WHP19C.LZH. It will let your Amiga collect all of the messages, Email, and software downloads you want at top speed, and wil then sign you off to answer everything offline – not costing you anything. It makes it very easy and automatic to do all the things you do on CIS. This is not a free program – the one you download is a working demo that has some very aggravating 'guilt' screens. To download that, you would go to Library 17, type BROWSE, and when you come to the program, at the Disposition! prompt, type DOWNLOAD. The menus will tell you the rest of what you need. You need to know that when asked for a "Filename for your computer" you need to give the path as well as the name.
