#Assembling rexxglue.asm
5 messages in this thread
Bill,
I am having some problems assembling rexxglue.asm from the Developer's
subdirectory of the ARexx 1.10 disk. I have to plead near total ignorance
about assembly programming, so its probably something real simple 🙂
I am using the SAS 5.10a assembler with the command line :
ASM -iINCLUDE: rexxglue.asm
The first three errors/warnings I am getting are the following :
> rexxglue.asm 20 Warning: public symbol not defined
> XDEF _AddRsrcNode
>
> rexxglue.asm 22 Error: data generation must occur in reloc section
> move.w #_LVOAddRsrcNode,d1
>
> rexxglue.asm 23 Error: data generation must occur in reloc section
> bra.s CallSeq1
and several dozen more just like these.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks! Kevin

Kevin,
I suspect that Bill's assembly routines were written for a more
"standard" assembler. SAS's assembler, while it works for code written for
it, is a bit ideosyncratic, and you would need to "tweak" the source code
to compensate for it's ideosyncracies — most of which have to do with how
the SAS assembler is designed to support the various "memory models" of the
C compiler. An easier solution might be to get ahold of a more standard
assembler – I would recommend the public-domain assembler A68K by Charlie
Gibbs, particularly if you only need it for occasional use. If you are
going to be doing a lot of assembly work, you might look into one of the
other commercial assemblers (like Cape or Adept). In order to modify the
source you have to work with the SAS asm command, you'll have to have a
pretty good understanding of the various addressing modes used by the SAS
memory models, and spend a lot of time studying the SECTION (oops, I mean
CSECT) directive that's unique to the SAS assembler.
Hope this helps….

Kevin,
ASM from SAS is not a *standard* assembler, it leans more toward mixing
assembly with 'C'. Take Bob's advice and go with something a bit easier to
work with. His suggestions are good ones. A68k can be downloaded here.
good luck.

Bob,
Thanks for the reply! Looks like I'll be trying to locate the A68K
assembler locally on one of the boards here in the DC area.
Thanks!

Kevin,
There is no reason to assembly it — in the same directory is rexxglue.o
— just link with it. Works for me. Make sure that somewhere along the
line you include rxslib.h (I include that in my precompiled includes).
