Today, my husband had his bypass surgery – five bypasses! In spite of his
very weak condition, things could hardly have gone better. The doctors had
predicted that the operation could take a minimum of four hours and might
extend to seven or eight. They were through in less than four and a half.
They did not have to use extra special means to re-start the heart.
It is beating on its own, and hardly knows what to do with all that nice
supply of blood it is getting. When we visited him tonight, he was able to
communicate with us. A tube in his throat prevented him from talking, but
he was spelling words into our hands, and not even mis-spelling! We are so
very much relieved, and so delighted.
My most sincere thanks to all of you for your interest, for your prayers,
and for your friendship and support during this difficult time. We are not
completely home free yet. There could still be complications, and the next
forty-eight hours will still be very critical, but so far, none of the
possible complications have occurred, and Richard's progress is amazing his
doctors and nurses.

Ben,
All is going as well as we could possibly hope for. He survived 5
bypasses, and seems to have suffered none of the complications that so
often happen to people in his greatly weakened condition. We are hoping
for the best – quite a few more years that are healthier and more active
than the past several.

It does look as though we have avoided the greatly feared complicatons, and
that the next few years will be much better than the last few. It's
wonderful.

This is the first I've heard of this. I have an uncle who also had a
quadruple bypass about 10 years ago, and he's still going strong at 74. You
and your husband are in my thoughts, take care!

That's great news. We all just knew everything would come out all
right. A guy I worked with up until last September, and who was retiring
in October, had to quit work a month early to have a quadruple bypass. Now
he's retired and says he feels like he felt when he was 30 years younger.
I feel confident that in about a month or so, Richard will feel the same
way. GodSpeed!
