#Mac/IBM viewing?

Hello … I'm not an Amiga user, I'm afraid, although I've used them at the
place where I worked. I have obtained an Amiga "MSETTER" animation
(whatever that means) from a BBS, and I am wondering if there is any way to
view it, or just to extract the images from it, on the Mac or IBM (I can
access both). I hear that some Amiga animation files are just
strung-together IFF files, but could an IBM IFF converter get those? I
would appreciate any help.
Failing that … is there an Amiga utility to convert MSETTER
animations to GIF89a files (which permit multiple images)? Thanks

Don, A 'msetter' file is an proprietary format for use by an Amiga program
called 'Moviesetter' (an animation tool). I have never seen any type of
'msetter –> iff/gif' converter. The only way I suspect that you'll be
able to get this to IFF/IBM is to:
Get hold of the actual Moviesetter program. Load in your file. I'd think
that Moviesetter has an option to 'step' through an animation file one
frame at a time, and to save individual frames. Save the frame/frames you
want as standard Amiga IFF files.
Once you have standard Amiga IFF files you can use either a commercial
product, or a PD/Shareware product to get these to GIF format (and many
other formats as well)
A commercial product (Amiga) that does this easily is ADPro, published by
ADPro. I'm not personally familiar with PD/Shareware products, but I'd bet
a look in the Amiga file searcher, searching for GIF would result in
one-several programs.
————Another approach, if all you want is ONE frame from your
'msetter' file. Use the Moviesetter anim player, and a screen grabbing
utility, and just capture the first frame as an IFF. You'd still need to
convert (using ADPro, etc) to your IBM/Mac format. Good luck

As I recall, Moviesetter files (which is what you have) aren't IFF ANIMs,
but rather a different type of animation involving moving and animated
objects on a scrolling background or series of backgrounds. Short of
buying an Amiga and Moviesetter, you're out of luck. It wouldn't lend
itself to a multiple image GIF (which GIF87a also supported, although not
as well…) because the overall image is comprised of several things which
may be animated at different rates and paths.
I believe there is a player program for Moviesetter files here in LIB 14,
but it's been so long that I may be mistaken (or the file may no longer be
here…).
