IFF-PICT convert
7 messages in this thread
HEEELLLLPPPPP! I'm trying to convert IFF/ILBM files to PICT and bring them
up on the Mac using ImageLink and Mac-2-Dos or AMax. ImageLink gives me a
256K file. Using Mac-2-Dos, I can make a file with a PICT resource type
and a SPNT creator (for SuperPaint). The problem is that when I try to
pick up the resulting file under SuperPaint on the Mac, I get a blank bit
map. The ImageLink folks say that M2D is the preferred route for transfer,
but they told me to use the default creator with PICT res type. M2D's
creator (Central Coast Software) said to use PICT res type with the creator
for the Mac program I want to use. Someone must be doing these
conversions–I can't seen Active Circuits advertizing and selling a PICT
converstor if it didn't work.
Anyone out there know how to manage this?? Many thanks in advance!

Not having any of the programs, I would guess that you should do as the
ImageLink folks said, use the default creator, since SuperPaint might
assume a particular extra resource if it is tagged as a file which
SuperPaint created.

Steve: Thanks, but that's what they told me, but there is no "default"
creater, per se, and Central Coast Software confirms it. If you leave the
creator blank, Mac-2-Dos makes a file with 0 blocks. I'm still trying to
get a straight answer out of Active Circuits, and I really get the
impression that all they did to check the PICT conversion was bring a PICT
file into IFF/ILBM format. I'm really relying on anyone who has actually
pulled off the ILBM-PICT transfer to tell me any combination of steps with
any Mac paint software that actually works! Best regards, Bob T.
The "default" creator for ANY Mac file is "????".

Steve: Thanks. I discovered my problem with help through Active Circuits'
excellent technical help. It turns out that I was trying to use 24 bit
images on a non-24 bit equipped CX, and the software was ignoring the
image. It turned out that the creator didn't matter so long as I set
ImageLink to "Color Map" before conversion, resulting in 8 bit PICT files.
The result were truly impressive! Most useful to me was the aspect ratio
correction, giving me correctly scaled \images that looked the same on the
Mac as they did on the Amiga. I can't wait to blast some of my Mac using
friends with some 24 bit ray traces out of Imagine. And the medical
imaging project is now racing ahead full speed. Thanks for your help! Dr.

Studio 8 version 2.0 will load in IFF/ILBM pictures and then let save them
in either pict or TIFF.

Orlando: Thanks. Unfortunately, I was unaware of Studio 8's capabilities,
but I will certainly try out the software now. Best regards, Bob T.
