#9600 Modem Probs!

I have a large problem with my new 9600 baud modem. And would like to know if anyone has any suggestions. First off Im not new at modems, I have a USR dual standard 9600 that Ive borrowed from a friend that modem I have no problems with at all. My problem is with a new Infotel 9600/ 32/42bis which I cannot get to connect at straight 9600 on any of the boards that I call with the USR, I realize that the HST standard is probally quite different and I cant get 19200 but I should be able to get a straight 9600 connect but I cant, So does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the infotel to connect at 9600 with a USRobtics modem? Ive tried many different NVram settings to no avail but if anyone can think of some settings that might work please let me know. Thanks in advance, Chuck E.

Unless the boards you want to call are using USR Dual Standards, you are not going to connect at anything higher than 2400.

Thanks for the reply Steve, The main boards that I call do have dual standard HSTs and I still cant get any higher than 2400, But why wouldnt I be able to get a straight 9600 connect I wonder? Is USR's standards so different that it wont even support another 9600 modem other than its own? Thanks, Chuck E.

Chuck, If they've got a Dual Standard it supports v.32 (which is the international 9600 standand and what your modem has). When a USR answers it will try to connect at 9600 using it's protocol, if that fails, it then tries v.32. Sometimes your modem will timeout waiting for the v.32 handshake. You might check your modem's manual to see if you can increase the timeout period.

Also, check with the sysop. By default V.32 is not enabled on USR Dual Standards.. And you have now found out the great divider of modems. Propriatary (HST, Hayes, PEP) Vs international Standard V32/V32bis.. — Alan Russell

A current USR DS will support v32 9600 no sweat, as long as the modem's owner has not intentionally disabled the capability. –Ben

Thanks, I still think it may be somthing in my nvram settings but I will check with the sysops and Im also going to call Zoom Technolgy and see if they may be of any help. Chuck E.
