HELLO THERE! NEEDLESS TO SAY, I NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN. THIS TIME I SUSPECT
IT IS QUITE SERIOUS. YOU SEE, I AM STILL TRYING TO EXPAND MY A2000 TO THE
LIMIT, AGAINST ALL ADVICE, THAT IS, FROM MY IBM FRIENDS. ANYWAY, I JUST
PURCHASED A MULTI I/O CARD FOR THE IBM SIDE. IT HAS THE FOLLOWING FEATURES:
1. FLOOPY DISK ADAPTER: TWODS/DD FLOPPY DISK CAN BE ADDED. 2. 2 SERIAL I/O
PORTS (RS-232-1, RS-232-2) 3. BATTERY BACKUP CLOCK/CALENDAR 4. PARALLEL
PRINTER PORT 5. GAME PORT ADAPTER IT COMES WITH ALL KINDS OF SELCT JUMPERS
MOST I DON'T UNDERSTAND. FOR EXAMPLE WHAT IS A JP2:COM1 OR COM2 SELECTING
JUPER, AND WHAT POSITION SHOULD IT BE IN. THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET THAT COMES
WITH THIS MULTI I/O CARD IS WELL DIAGRAMMED BUT IT IS NOT WRITTEN IN ENGLISH.
WELL IT IS WRITTEN IN ENGLISH BUT IT READS MORE LIKE A POOR TRANSLATION FROM
GERMAN. FOR EXAMPLE, ONE STATEMENT READS, "…THERE ARE 31 GOLDEN TINGERS
WHICH ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT THEMAINBOARD WITH THE MULTI I/O CARD. …MAKE
SURE IF THE GOLDEN FINGERS ARE IN CONTACT WITH THE CORRESPONDING CONNECTOR
PROPERLY.
…" MY PROBLEM IS THIS. I INSTALLED THE CARD WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. I DID
NOT CHANGE ANY OF THE JUMPERS BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SELECT THEM FOR.
WHEN I BOOTED THE IBM SIDE I GOT A MESSAGE THAT SAID "BOOT FAILURE" PRESS
KEY… WHEN I PRESSED A KEY, I GOT ANOTHER MESSAGE WHICH SAID THAT THERE WAS
AN ERROR LOADING THE OPERATING SYSTEM. ALL I DID WAS INSERT THE CARD. I DID
NOT CONNECT THE FLOPPY DISK ADAPTER. I ALSO GOT A MESSAGE AT THE TOP OF THE
SCREEN THAT SAID THAT COM1 WAS FOUND OR LOCATED AT E0F8, OR SOMETHING LIKE
THAT. I DON'T RECALL SEEING THAT MESSAGE BEFORE. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW
IS, IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD DO TO THE I/O CARD BEFORE I INSERT IT? IT
CAME WITH A DISK WITH A LOT OF COMMANDS ON IT, BUT IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THIS
DISK IS TO BE USED AFTER THE CARD IS INSTALLED. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY
ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME ON THIS, ASAP. I CAN STILL SEND THE CARD BACK IF IT
DOESN'T WORK WITH THE A2000 BIDGEBOARD, ALTHOUGH THE SUPPLIER SAID IT WOULD.

IT. THERE ARE SEVERAL INTERRUPT SELECT JUMPERS. UNFORTUNATELY I CANNOT LIST
THEM ALL HERE. THEY CONCERN THE SERIAL PORTS AND THE PARALLEL PORT. SOME
DEAL WITH ENABLE/DISABLE, ETC. IF YOU CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT,

COM1: is 'Communications port 1' and is the 1st serial port on an IBM
PC. COM2: is 'Communications port 2' and is the 2nd serial port…and so on.
I presume the phrase about J2 deals with if you already have a serial port or
not. In one position, it will address the serial port on your multi card to
be COM1: and in the other position, it will address it as COM2:.
The various devices that attach to a PC get 'addressed'by the system
at certain locations and they set certain 'interupts' to tell the system that
they have received/not received certain data or signals so that data can be
acted on.
Without seeing the card, it's very hard to give you specific
instructions…in fact, unless it's the same card I have, it's impossible,
but I can offer a few suggestions:
1. remove the card and boot the Bridge
2. insert the disk that came with the multi-function card
3. look on that disk for a file named READ.ME or README or something
like that.
4. If it's there, print it out and read it!
5. If it's not, look for a file with a .BAT extension, such as
INSTALL.BAT or something that looks like it's an installation
script file.
6. Make a COPY of the disk you got with the card and with the COPY
try to execute the INSTALL script or program if there is one.
7. Go back and read the manual carefully, have the board sitting
on the desk and look at it while you're reading the manual. See
if you can locate the switches they are talking about and see
what the settings are and/or should be.
8. Go back to the dealer's and have them install the card for you.
9. Get help from someone familiar with PC hardware.
