I am a new hard drive owner, recently got an A3000, and have a question
about backing up the thing with 3.5" floppies. I am working with large anim
files, too big to fit on a single floppy. Can I still back these up with
HDBackup? Does it matter if such a file is spread over several fl floppies?
If I want to save a large number of anims, but they're too large for one
floppy, can I back 'em up with HDBackup and, at a later date, reload them
to the hard drive for playback? Thanks for any help on this one. –George

Yes, just put all of your pics into one directory, and back up that
directory only. It will split it across disks.

There have been a lot of bugs reported with HDBackup that comes on the
OS2.04 system disk. I use BRU with no problem, but others say that BRU is
a version on HDBackup. For insurance, go get a copy of Quarterback and use
it.

Quarterback is basicly a HD Backup utility program. It is up to version
6.0 now I think and does what HDBackup is SUPPOSE TO DO. It can select
certain files only or the whole thing to backup to just about any type
media you want – disk, type, etc. I guess it is probably the widest used
commercial type program avaible with good backing from the people at
Central Coast Software. Their phone is (512) 328-6650 if you want to talk
with them about it.

Thanks for the additional information. It sounds like a good
program to consider. I just talked to my Amiga dealer. Hee too That's HE
too recommended Quarterback.

I used to use Quarterback and it's a great program. However, a couple of
points. First, it is not up to v.6.0. V.5.0 hasn't even been released.
Secondly, it does NOT work with streaming tape backups. 5.0 is supposed to
add that capability, but it won't be released for a few months. When I
upgraded from a 40-meg to a 210-meg Quantum HD, that's when I stopped using
Quarterback. Backing up to about 239 floppies is too much for me.

I've been having reliable and easy results with AmiBack and a WangTek 150mb
tape drive, backing up a 40mb quantum.

Two questions:
What is your hard disk controller? That appears to be what the entire
issue is about. Generally, it's not the tape drive nor hard drive that's
the problem. It's getting the backup software to work with different HD
SCSI controllers.
Does AmiBack allow you to append different backups to the same tape?

I use TrumpCardPro and enthusiastically recommend it. Well worth the price
and never has a problem with any drive I throw at it. AmiBack works with
it fine, with my WangTek 5150ES. I back up my Quantum 40 over and over
again, then just erase the tape and start over again. I guess that means it
does 'append'. The tape is 150Mb and my drive is only 40. So far, so
good. And I just sent off for the newer updated AmiBack. Love that TCPro.
May have to update to DAT tape cause I'm filling up my 330 meg Imprimis
2383N drive fast.

I wholeheartedly agree with your entusiasm for IVS controllers. The
GrandSlam is fantastic.
Who makes AmiBack and how much is it?
I'm using the GrandSlam (which contains the Trumpcard Pro) together with a
210-meg Quantum and a 150-meg WangTek 5150ES tape drive. The problem is I
got the tape drive from TTR Development together with their MRBackup
Professional software. It's their software that doesn't work right.
Just to make sure that AmiBack does allow you to append, I want to know
the following. I have four partitions on my hard drive. Can I backup the
first partition at the beginning of the tape, and then immediately backup
my second partition right after that, without the tape rewinding? I want to
backup all four partitions to the same tape in sequence. Will AmiBack allow
me to do this?

i think so. as i said, i have backed up my 40 meg drive several
times without rewinding. as far as the WangTek working with the
TCPro and AmiBack – there WAS a problem until I sent IVS my WangTek
and copy of AmiBack. Then IVS and Moonlighter (Amiback programmers)
got together and FIXED whatever it was. No more problems of any
kind. Call Moonlighter for exact info on their program. They are
really the authorities, not me. Rather than repeat ad infinitum – it
does exactly what I said it does. I don't have 'multiple' partitions
so I can't answer what I don't know. Call Moonlighter.

in addition to using Quarterback for backup, I also use it when I want
to bring a set of files over to a friend: I just select those files and
back them up to a few floppies. QB will prompt me for each disk, and will
write using its own format, if that option is selected. The QB format
writes to a disk in sequential tracks, so a floppy is filled in a fraction
of the time it would take AmigaDOS — gronnk, gronnk, gronnk…
I just need to add a single floppy with the Quarterback program on it,
and I'm ready to roll! Fast and painless.

other items. The others arrived so I'm still waiting for Quarterback. I
