Now, this isn't a red filter like one thinks of a deep red; it's actually a
filter with a slight tinge of red in various degrees. I use a 40 red cc
filter. They come in many different grades, such as 10cc, 20cc, 30cc, etc.
Kodak sells color correction gel filters, just ask your local camera store
for Kodak Wratten gel filters. They are not that cheap, but they should
serve your purposes. Watch out, though, they scratch easily. Make some
tests with a 30 or 40cc red, and if it too much or to little, get another
filter with a higher or lower number. A 40cc red works well on a 1084 and
1950 monitor. These filters also come in hard plastic, sold through the
Tiffen filter Co. When you are first setting this up, make a grid in a
drawing program, like Dpaint, and put it on the screen. Use this graphic to
determine your crop marks (where the images are going to be cut off) and to
see if the screen and lens are parallel to each other. This is crucial,
otherwise your images may be in focus on the left side and not on the right
side. With either of the above mentioned films, my exposures tend to be
about eight (8) to four (4) seconds each. This is due to the slow ISO as
well as stopping down to about f/8 or f/16. Anyway, just meter off of the
screen with the lens stopped down somewhat. You'll gain a little depth of
field by stopping down. Now I know these are long exposures, but hey, no
one said this would be easy! IMPORTANT TIP: I noticed that the whites in my
images tend to wash out if they are pure white, so if I'm going to shoot an
image, I'll lower a pure white to a very light grey. With a long exposure,
the light grey will become more white. The latitude of the film when
shooting the screen seems a bit limited. If you have lots of whites and
greys, you'll do better to lower them all equally just a bit. You'll have
to experiment with this since your monitor's brightness will also affect
the exposure and therefore the light colors. IMPORTANT TIP: USE A
