Can't comment on HPGL/2. It *should* be as fast as Postscript.
On my postscript printer, as soon as AutoCAD finishes counting vectors, the
printer motor fires up and paper starts to move. Clearly, Postscript has no
real delay in processing line art. Screens (greyscale) *do* slow it down.
Perhaps I need to do a Postscript printer review when I finish the card
reviews.
In my experience, Postscript is *far* faster than PCL. On a DOS version of
R10, one of my clients plotted a 160 KB file to a HP IIp w/2.5MB in 32
min. We poped a PacificPage cart in the machine and the same plot took 3.5
min. AutoCAD 386 will be much quicker on PRPLOTS, but its still slower than
plotting to Postscript.

HP-GL/2 and Postscript seem to have some of the same features (screens,
etc.) What functional differences are there in terms of plotted output? Do
both support screened linetypes? Is there any support in Postscript for user
defined linetypes? And obviously, linewidths should be no problem on either
type, right?
