Please tell me about the SummaSketch problem
Dave – could you possibly be a bit more explicit? What kind of problem have
you heard about?

We ise SummaSketch II digitizers. In Library 9 I discovered SUMMA.ZIP
about a problem with the tablets locking up R11 c2. We have experienced
lockups. I'd like more info on the problem, since the last time it happened
I had to reset the system, and somehow blitzed a week's work in the
process. The Library file contains AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files that
may or may not be relevant to my system. Knowledge is power… or
protection. [A(Oops. How'd I do that?)
Dave – I'll download the file and have a read. The only problems with Summas
that I (and nine kazillion other Summasketch users) have frequently is that
they are incapable of reverting to digitizer mode when you shell out of
AutoCAD and run a program that uses their mouse emulator.
Lockups is something new… I'll get back to you.

Dave – I downloaded the file and read it, but it's not very informative as to
what the problem is; the text file seems to be a reply to another message.
When do you lockup? Is your system comparable to the one in SUMMA.ZIP? What
makes you think it's the digitizer that's causing the problem anyway?

My setup is only roughly comparable: HP RS-20, 4 Mb. But the digitizer is
the s same. And no one seemed to have any good explanation for the
lockups, although having only about 8 Mb free on the hard disk paprtition
may (or, may not) have anything to do with the lockups. It hasn't happened
often enough to make a statistical analysis, nor will it, since I refuse to
us R11 anymore until the problem is solved. Others occassionally use this
machine for plots and have also had lockups when they did some drawing
manipualtion prior to plotting.
When I brought up the problem at the SFAUG no one seemed to have a clue
(but lots of advice). Naturally, when I saw SUMMA.ZIP I figured either a)
it was at least part of the problem, or b) it will be part of a problem.
So I'm not too anxious to use R11 until the digitizer situation becomes
clearer, too. Even if it turns out the previous lockups were caused by
inadequate hard disk space. (My boss says by the new budget time this
summer he can spring for another 84 Mb drive).
Dave – I and many other people are using Summasketch digitizers with Release
11 with no problems (complaints, yes, but no problems <g>). I have an old
one, a Plus, that I got when I bought Release 9, but it still works. The IIs
are a little better, in that they give you the option of a polled mode on
configuration — this does away with the occasional jerkiness of the cursor.
Are you coming from Release 10 standard or 10/386? Going to the 32-bit
version takes some getting used to… one of the things you need now more
than ever is lots and lots of hard disk space.
I think your problem could have a very great deal to do with having 8Mb free
on the partition. I don't know how big your drawings are, but AutoCAD makes
swap files as it sets itself up, and they grow as you work. 8Mb would fill up
pretty fast at this rate. Also, since you are locking up, those swap files
are not being cleaned up; they are left on your hard drive, again, occupying
space.
I'd suggest making a LOT more space available to AutoCAD itself, and routing
your swap file to a different partition (use CFIGPHAR), again, with lots of
space, and then try Release 11 again.
