Jake: We're having problems with the DLD driver which is currently shipping with the Speedstar cards in the Gateway 2000 machines. The driver is version 1.20A. The problem is as soon as we execute any command which attempts to highlight an entity, the system locks up and we have to reboot. Gateway doesn't seem to know anything about it. If we switch to an older version of the driver which came with an earlier machine, everything is fine. Is there any known problems with this version of DLD? Also, I noticed in the latest Gateway add they have dropped the Speedstar and have gone with a high end ATI card. I don't suppose it ships with a copy of DLD? Mike

We are having the exact same problem with our Panacea SpeedCAD DLD386 shipped by Austin with the Diamond Speedstar. Our version is 2.16c.

Steve: I think the 2.16C is just the version for the dldsetup. Try getting into the drawing editor and type "DLDVERS". If it like ours, it will say "Version 1.20A Speedstar". The word I got was that this is a buggy version of the Panacea driver, and there is a 1.21 version available from the Speedstar BBS.

Steve, Call Diamond at 408-736-2000 to get a free update/fix to the problem you're experiencing. Jake

The problem you mention was a glitch that was immediately fixed. Get an updated DLD386-VGA driver from Diamond at 408-736-2000. As far as Gateway having switched to the ATI Ultra on some of their systems, that's certainly true. It unfortunately does not ship with our DLD software (but you can always buy a copy of the 8514/A DLD386 software from your local Panacea dealer <g>). Jake

Jake: Thanks for the info. We ended up talking with Diamond and downloaded the file Friday afternoon. I'll try it out Monday AM. By coincidence, we received another 10 of the Gateway 486-33's in Friday morning, and all ten had the ATI Ultra card. Initial reaction was that we didn't really care for the ACAD driver that comes with the card. Maybe I'm biased because I'm so used to the great drivers Panacea puts out. We're going to try the ATI driver for a couple of weeks and see if our initial reaction changes. If not, we will be ordering some Panacea. Mike

Thanks Ang! We're pretty excited about the write-up in PC Mag. It still amazes how different (and larger) the mass-market/Window market is for software. I'll tell you more about it next week. Jake
