#ACAD settings

Don,
I noticed that your EMM386 call doesn't specify the amount of memory to
convert. For some fool reason, when you just use "EMM386.exe ram", the
default amount of memory converted to EMS is 256K. This is why ACAD reports
only 240K of extended memory – if any memory is converted, ACAD will only use
the converted memory, so it doesn't know you have that 8Meg. Try changing
the line to read :
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe xxxx ram
Where xxxx is the amount of memory you want ACAD to use, i.e. your 8Meg minus
the 1024K base for 7168, or if you need to reserve XMS memory for another
application subtract that out as well. You should see your status report for
extended increase, and speed will be all better.
Sorry for the repetition if someone has already pointed this out by the time
this is uploaded.

Problem with that is you limit your memory to being used as EXPanded,
whereas lots of applications want to see EXTended. The best solution,
naturally, is to use QEMM, but short of that *I* recommend leaving out
EMM386 entirely.

Larry,
I agree, that's what I do when I run under Win. When not under Win,
some older apps require expanded as opposed to extended though. Also agree
that Qemm is the better route, especially for non-Windows use.
