Can somebody refresh my memory? What does an all red screen mean? I
know it means that one of the boot-up diagnostics failed. But which one?
I'm having trouble with a GVP 030 combo board. Originaly I started
having trouble with the onboard controller so I returned it to GVP and they
promptly sent me a replacement. (Only took one day- great service!) But
when I install the new board the computer will only last a few minutes
before it locks up and crashes. That's when I see the red screen.
Without the board the machine works fine with my original GVP Impact II
controller running as a stock A2000 with the 68000 CPU. Can I have gotten
a bad board? Or (dread the thought) could it be something with the
motherboard of the A2000. This is most distressing! Any comments would be
welecome.

Here is an excerpt from an article I wrote for TRANSACTOR about that, I
think about 1986:
As this routine is taking place, the Amiga is sending you messages with the
screen colors. If all is well, we usually see this sequence:
Dark gray The initial hardware tested OK. The 68000 is
running and the registers are readable Light gray The
software is coming in and seems OK White The initialization tests
were all passed
But if something is wrong with your Amiga, you might see:
Red If there is an error in ROM Green If there is an
error in the Chip RAM Blue If an error was found in the custom
chips Yellow If the 68000 found an error before the error
trapping software (the guru) was up and running
Hope this helps. The article goes into considerably greater length on
startup error codes, gleaned from a number of sources – Usenet, ROM kernal
manuals, hardware manuals, etc. The article is old, but I think nothing
about this has changed.
