Dave…Welll..I broke down and bought Fractal Painter 2.0, X/2 and all those
neat little extra dealys…<g>
Of Course Now I gotta get a new Tablet…Pressure Sensitive…You Know, It
NEVER Ends around here!!!!
Sooooo….What's the best and easiest small tablet to Buy and Configure with
Painter?

Well James, I wish I could give you an answer, because that would mean that I
had found the money to get one (a p.s. tablet) for myself! Using FD Painter w/
a mouse is, IMHO, agonizing! (Ana, of course, has given strong argument that
mouse use CAN work….)
Ana STRONGLY supports Wacom, but they're just a little too expensive for my
tastes. I had thought about the XGT (about which there is a thread going on
somewhere here), but I will probably end up looking at the Calcomp Drawing
Slate.
Pressure Sensitive tablets garner STRONG feelings, you'll find!<g>
You might want to ask in the Painter Users Group section of GO COMART.

I called Fractal and talked to their tech. support.
"Offically" they do not/can not reccomend anything specific.
However upon further insistance I got the Tech to go "off the record"
and he confirmed that the WACOM 6×9 ArtV was "His personal favorite".
The Calcompt doesn't really support the tilt features and their slow with
driver upgrades.
He also held the phone next to both the ART-V and the Calcompt III and ran the
pen over the surfaces….The calcomp sounds like a very rough surface which he
confirmed while the WACOM ART V was nice and smooth.
He also mentioned that the WACOM people are always upgrading the drivers to
make sure they get the optimum confifurations.
I guess the WACOM would be my current choice based on Fractal's Tech.

Kind of confirms some of what I've been hearing too.

Murph, I would say the Wacom pressure sensitive tablets are without a
doubt the preferred tablet of choice. The issue has always been, it
seems, their higher cost, but in this case you really do get what you
pay for. IMHO

I'd check out John T's recommendation too, tablets like mice are a
personal thing. You know, the "artists" paintbrush. <g> But you can't
go wrong with the Wacom. IMHO

You won't know what you are missing on a tiny ArtV board until you try a bigger
tablet… If you can't afford a 12×12 Wacom, buy a Kurta XGT!

I already own a kurta IS/ONE but kurta says no deal on a trade <g>.
I would like a pressure sensitive 12×12 but currently I've been
spending more than I've been making so I gotta do a reality check on
equipment purchases…Heh..Heh.. What kind of surface does the XGT
have? Is is rough like the calcomp or smooth like the ArtV.? Murph'

I use both 12×12 and 6×9 wacom tablets and I can't tell you what I like more.
Well, I can tell you that the 6×9 was connected to my workstation because I
think it is the best board for sketching ever. I can hold it like an art
notebook in my crossed legs and start to draw just like in real life. I think
that for most people, the ArtZ will be enough.
However, we are sending the 510 to madrid. Jesus wants to get a new 12×18 and I
will take the 12×12, but I'm thinking in selling the 12×12 (anyone? 🙂 and get
a new 6×8 (and some extra money to buy one MGA 2).

Before you drop $$$ on a WACOM, check out the Kurta XGT. My advice.
Any of these P S Tablets people send out product "on Approval?"

PMJI, but I started a "Fractal" thread myself a week or so back, ended
up buying Fractal bundled with the Wacom, and it's wonderful. I'm
not an artist, but the Wacom feels the most solid, the most
responsive thing I've ever picked up. (However, I've only looked at
other tablets at things like Comdex — you know, you have about two
seconds to make an evaluation of anything before the crush pushes you
back). The pen is feather light, and seems to work with (these)
non-artist type hands. The Wacom was dead simple to configure for
Painter — the Wacom default installation works out of the box.
BTW, I suggest you check out Kai's Power Tools, now available for Fractal and
Photoshop.
Thanks for the tip on Kai's Power Tools….I've been wondering if they were
ported over to the Fractal Painter product….That's good news.
BTW if you have any idea where I might find the Telephone number for WACOM
please let me know….I want to talk to them about their new Tablet I was told
it's called ART-V or something like that.
