I called FTI and asked specifically what the drawback to tga versus native a60 format is, and he said it's only speed, because the Abekas needs to convert RGB to YUV for its frambuffer. We agreed that since 3DS doesn't render YUV directly (listening Gary? Good R4 suggestion) where you convert wouldn't really make much difference unless you found a faster, better conversion utility than the Abekas itself. The only advantage I can see in the ASDG drivers is their color correction, which, I believe, comes out better than the 3DS color correction, but it could be my imagination <g>. Hey, if anyone wants to do an RGB->YUV converter as an IXP routine, it would be trivial (as long as they knew how to do the conversion optimally). I think Gus has even been doing some work in this area. BTW, the ASDG color correction code is very evolved… even better than the native 3DSr3 color correction. – G

Yes, I have done RGB->YUV conversion for three drivers. The BANDIT VTPADI, the FAST RDPADI and lastly, the PAR low level driver. 4:1:1, 4:2:2, Chroma correction, noise filtering, temperature adjustments, the works… All in 486/586 floating point assembly. It's over 4Mb per second in my computer (3 frames per second where the Amiga takes over 20 seconds for a single image). Ok, ok… 'nough bragging… <g>

Thanks for confirming my memory (I knew didn't forget to remember what I thought I didn't forget… <g>). I remember discussing ASDG driver color correction with you briefly at Siggraph, and you spoke very highly of it. I also remember Gus saying he'd been doing a little RGB-YUV stuff and that it was a breeze. Maybe we'll see a Pyros Partnership PC-Abekas utility (Greg, you listening… <g>)? BTW, will you be at NAB? As Gus just said, he's got plenty of YUV conversion code. Re NAB, I just don't have the time in March. Our schedule is so busy that 2 days off just doesn't fit anywhere. Siggraph is the only time they'll be letting me out of my box this year, I'm afraid. (not even any diving trips… 🙁 I'll be sending our new NAB demo reel in my place though. At least I'll be well-represented! – G

I look forward to seeing the reel (hopefully I'll get a submission in before the deadline…). No diving trips?!?!?!? Sheeesh. You'll get pale and mildewy if you don't be careful <g>. Too bad about NAB, but I'll see you at Siggraph if not before. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

I already am pale and mildewy. Siggraph is only 6 months away! – G

>> I'll be sending our new NAB demo reel in my place though. This note serves 2 purposes. One, to request a copy of the NAB demo reel. My best work isn't what you want on the tape, and I won't be attending NAB, but I'd still like to see "the best of the best". The second, and most important reason for the note, is to verify that Ozcis is working properly after my transition from Tapcis.

So how do you like Ozcis? <g> -JE

>> Ozcis? <g> I think I like it. It can be registered for less $$ than Tapcis and it seems to be more feature-laden. Why the <g>??

David >>Why the <g>?? << Because I assumed you were going to say you "I love it". Everyone seems to be bailing out on Tapcis, so you get a Grin. <g> -JE

David, I've got no idea how the NAB real is (or if it will) be distributed. My only responsibility is to make the thing. From Tapcis to Ozcis, eh? I'm a Procomm+ guy. <g> – G

David: Your message came through lud and clear! Welcome to OzCIS land! Greg Pyros

>> Welcome to OzCIS land! Seems FAR more versatile than Tapcis… I figure that if I'm going to spend so many hours/week reading the forum, I should really use the best available tools. Is there a way to retrieve mail in the same pass as getting the forum stuff? (In case you can't tell, I haven't gotten too far in the docs yet.)

David: Docs? You read the docs? Unless JackP writes them, I ignore them totally! Yes, the program will read all your private mail as well as forum mail in either or both passes. Just go into the hosts configuration for the private mail, and the forum config for that info. Greg Pyros

>> Docs? You read the docs? Ssshhhhh… don't tell. I never used to, but I started to hate it when I'd say "How do you…?" and someone says "See section 1.1 on page 2 of the docs".
