#Memory/HD/support

Where can I get a memory expansion for my Amiga 1000? I have 512{_k now and
would like to upgrade to 1.5 or 2.5 meg. Also where can I get a hard drive for
a reasonable price. Has anyone heard of a device that will allow the Amiga to
use standard IBM hard drives?
Does Commodore still support the Amiga's as far as memory goes? The amiga was
advertised "expandable to 8meg."…does Commodore still support this claim?

Michael,
There is an addon called the Wedge that will let you use IBM hard disks with
your 1000. Larry Phillips knows the address, but I don't (sorry). It is
probably the least expensive way to go. If you want to put on a hard disk, you
would probably be happiest with the Insider memory expansion from Michigan
Software. I seem to recall a price of $150 with 0K installed. Then you can get
your chips and install them, finding the lowest price you can. The Insider
will not interfere with other things like the hard disk, and most of the memory
boxes that go on the side will definitely interfere.

Warning: the ONLY conflict that anyone has seen with the Insider is — you
guessed it — the Wedge. It only showed up in a random sampling of machines
and was fixable in most cases, but there is a potential for problems (you are,
after all, breaking the rules by hanging two devices on the buss).
The Wedge with ANY other memory card, or the Insider with ANY other hard disk
controller, is apparently okay. Just FWIW. (Larry, if anyone's found the
solution to this one, please correct me! Great products, both. They'd make a
super team.)
Rick
Rick,
Thanks. I had not heard about that one. In fact, it is the first time I'd
heard of the Insider conflicting with anything at all. Of course, I have
neither of those products.
Betty
Mind you, I'm not saying it definitely WON'T work. There are plenty of people
with that combination, I am told, who are very happy. But an occasional
difficulty does crop up. It seems to be related to very old Amigas, if I
recall correctly.
Rick
Well, Rick, one thing I do have is a VERY old Amiga.
Betty
Same here, hon. In fact I was probably right behind you in line when they
first arrived at the stores. (I know I got one of the first batch to hit
Richmond, and was probably among the first three or four. And you guessed
it… no half-bright HERE! 😉
Rick
There is a gadget called the "Wedge" that fits on the side of your Amiga 1000.
Plug in an IBM HD controler and IBM hd and you are ready to fly! Cost of the
wedge alone was (I think) 150.00 U.S. A group in Canada makes and sells em.
You might check back issues of the shopper for address. Or check with Larry
Phillips.
