If you can tolerate a rudamentary question from a neophyte, please
answere this inquiry. What would you recommend as a decent 3D studio
start-up platform? How much memory do I need? How big should my
hard disk be (SCSI or IDE)? What special equipment do I need to
output to video?
P60 processor
32 MB RAM
540 MB SCSI hard drive
CD ROM
True color graphics board
For video output, you need to provide details on exactly whta you plan to do.

As a start-up system Daniel could probably get by with a 486-66 and
16MB RAM, save some cash up front and still have a very acceptable
system. More RAM could be added later if his models start swapping.
The Pentium processor, although worth every penny, is much more
expensive than the 486. Just my thoughts… Dave Marks (still
running a 486-33 w/ 16 Megs on one workstation… )
Actually, that's not true, David. Pentium systems are going for only
a few hundred dollars more than decent 486 66's, and the difference
in rendering speed seems to be more than worth it. Why start with
yesterday's equipment if today's only cost a few hundred dollars
more? And intel is dropping Pentium prices down to the 500 dollar
range in quantities of 1000, so the drop will be reflected in
systems, too.

Actually, Pentium systems are about $1000 more for a comparativly priced
system. Where can you get a system for a couple hundred difference?
I have been going thru this delema for a few weeks. Almost bought that Micron
P-60, but decided to wait. I think you will see a third generation
Pentium motherboard SOON solving a few nagging questions (especially PCI and
Cache). Prices will drop drastically when P5's start shipping in quantity.
You can only buy a Nexstore PCI SCSI-2 card, hech even COREL SCSI doesn't
support it!

I beg to differ. I look through the pages of Microtimes here in the Bay Area,
and P5 systems (not talking about brand names, quality, and engineering here,
just P5 systems) go from $600 more and up. There systems are usually ISA VLB
taiwanese motherboards, and I've had less than satisfactory experiences with
cheapo MB's so I wouldn't get one, but there are plenty of folks out there
making them work. I'm holding out for a DEC XL, personally.

You might be right there, I don't pay much attention to those ads and
would not reccommend those MBs. I have even been told by a
manufacturer (US made) and a few dealers to hold off a few months,
Intel has a schedule of price drops and next quarter should drop the
P5 chip by almost $200.

Great choice. That machine looks very sound. This summer should be a great
time to by a P5! (IMHO)

WOW is right! Just finished souping up the lowly 486-33 to a -66 VLB
with 2 GB's HD (plus 1.5 GB removable). Kids get the -33 <kid g>.
Now I wait till the summer for the P5 and a network. …or maybe
I'll net the -33 with the -66?

I have to take John's side here. I just got my new Micron P60,,JOY!!,,any way
I belive that the increased rend speed of a P60 or P66 make them a great
machine to learn on (I wish I had one then) because of all the "twiking" it
take to get things right when you are learning the program the speed of the
computer will keep things moving.
