In any case, I'm not sure exactly what Seagate did to make their
drives work better with the PAR. I'm just assuming that they
reporgrammed thermal recal and degauss cycles to preceed large block
transfers.

Actually, the solution was to allow a program to force it before a
large transfer.
Do the standard "off the shelf" Seagate 3655A drives work right with the PAR,
or are they selling a modified drive with the PAR.

Is this why DPS is no longer recommending the Seagate 3655 as the best choice
for the PAR?

Probably, but we have four of them working flawlessly for the last three
months, so we'll continue to sell and support them.
The "best" choice is the biggest, fastest disk that is supported. The Seagate
3655 works well, but it's not the fastest, and at 1/2gig, not the biggest,
either. But, like I said, it works well!!

Greg: That makes a lot of sense (about the 3655A drives having to be modified
for use with the PAR) and it really says that you have to buy the PAR and a
drive together. This isn't what I was told by somebody else – they told me that
you could just order a stock drive – but it does make a lot more sense
considering what you've told me about the automatic recalibration.

Yes, you are correct! The other reason is to make sure that you get the proper
cables to connect everything up (neither the drives or the unit comes with
these minor pieces).
And it sure is easier to get support when you purchased everything from the
same place! (no it's the board – no, it's the disk…aaarrrrrggggghhhhh!)

Greg: I would rather buy everything from the same place anyway. Somebody that I
talked to early on when the PAR was first announced acted like it would be
cheaper to buy the PAR an drive seperately. Now it sounds like a bad idea.
