#Longer "BEEP" needed
8 messages in this thread
Larry,
I found SetBeep in LIB 14, under the name SBEEP.ZOO, and installed it as per
the docs. I assume that it is working correctly, since it gives a sample of the
new sound when invoked.
I guess Keith isn't using DisplayBeep() in Access!, since it still outputs
the small, short beep, which my speakers won't catch unless there's a couple in
a row.
If Keith is listening, maybe he'll let us know how he impliments the beep
from within Access! How many different ways are there?
MIKE
Michael,
I know you got the answer in Conference, but for the benefit of anyone else
reading…
Keith uses his own routine, which drives the audio device. He has said that
the next version of Access! will have the option of using a visible flash,
called by DisplayBeep(), so don't throw SetBeep away.
What sound did you decide on? I personally like the car horn, but it drives my
wife crazy. 🙂

Larry,
Yeah, I liked the car horn, too, and if/when Keith updates Access! to use
DisplayBeep(), I'll probably use SetBeep with the horn.
I really couldn't hear much, if any, of the other sounds included in the
file, because they were too short and the speakers didn't catch them. I have
some longer 8SVX samples I can use.

P.S. – Note to Steve (from CO last night, sorry – didn't catch your PIN) –
I checked the BBS this morning, and the latest version of UUCP is

Michael, if you're a bit of a software hack, and if the source for
DisplayBeep() is included (or you can get your hands on it), I have a
suggestion.
You could open the audio.device and send a quick "chirp" — nothing more than a
fast level change would be necessary — then wait, oh, say 100 mSec or so
before more or less picking up with the existing code. The short chirp or
click would turn on your speakers for the real sound following shortly
thereafter. It's a moby kluge, but it ought to work. Whatcha think?
Rick
Rick,
That might work, but only for programs that use DisplayBeep(0 (which is a
system call, not a user written program). Access doesn't.
-larry
I know. I suggested it because of the comment made about not even being able
to hear the other sounds in the DisplayBeep() package. I thought this might be
a way to at least make that program useful. One could conceivably hack a
general purpose IFF player in the same manner. Agreed it would be no help to
the current rev of Access… but then Keith has already cobbled in a solution
to THAT problem.
Rick
Rick,
That sounds as if it would work, but Vic's class isn't that far along yet, so
I don't know how to do that – YET! Besides, as Larry already stated, Keith uses
his own Beep() routine, so it wouldn't work on Access!
I have another term (Amic .58E, I think) that, when downloading is finished,
sends three or four beeps in a row, which works very well. But my terminal of
choice is Access!, and since I've paid the registration fee for it, I feel
justified in asking questions, requesting certain features be added, etc., as
long as it's not something outrageous. And Keith's presence here, on a regular
basis, just makes it that much easier. Other programmers should be this
accessible. (No pun intended.)
MIKE
Keith,
WARNING, WARNING (visions of robby the robot…) You are about to be thrashed
to within a byte of your life (per Don Curtis) for not using DisplayBeep()
Warning…… (gd&r)
