Is it possible to download Amiga files from a PC? I just got a neat notebood
with a 14.4 faxmodem and would like to use it for all downloads since it is so
much faster than my Amiga with its old "Modet T" 1200 baud. I'd appreciate any
advice on this subject. Thanks to any and all in advance.
So, which notebook did you finally get?
Do you have CrosDos? You can read DOS disks & transfer software from libs
to Amiga with it. The actual messages are standard, any computer can read
& write them.

That's what I thought about the downloads, but wanted some corroboration. I
guess I'm the type who would wear a belt, suspenders and hold on just in case!
The software CIM for the PCs is really fab. very easy to use and lots of
options accessible by icon.
As to the notebook, I got an AMBRA. This is a fairly new company, and is a
fully-owned subsidiary of IBM. I tried three others and sent them all back. You
know about the Gateway, with its pea-sized trackball in an inconvenient
location for laptop use, and the Acer (the one you received) had a bad disk
drive, and besides, dealing with that company is frustrating to the MAX. I have
never had such problems with a dealer. I can't even contact a human being ther
who will tell me whether or not I have been given credit for the return of the
machine. It hasn't shown up on my account yet and messages left with the voice
mail are NEVER RETURNED! I hope I can kill a few sales for them because of the
way I have been treated. Anyway, the saga continued with a Toshiba — and there
was someting wrong with the display. The bottom of the screen was really
several shades lighter than the top. I couldn't get it adjusted (only one
control, as well) so that it looked good all over and I knew it would drive me
crazy over the long haul. The AMBRA is really terrific. A fine, clear, sharp,
bright screen and I have 12 meg of RAM and a 200 meg HD. Being able to use all
that mainstream software unavailable for the AMIGA is also fun. I am certainly
keeping the 3000, but expect to be using the PC more and more. It has become so
"user-friendly" with windows that all the old complaints don't seem to apply
anymore. The 486-DX2 chip running at 50 mhz makes all the operations plenty
fast for me. Anyway, that's where I am at the moment. How's by you? Hope James
and the Boots are all well.
Best, as always, Nancy
If you're looking to `download files' you can do it with any computer. To
transfer you can either do it direct via a null modem (connect serial
ports with r/s reversed) or via disk with D@D or CrossDos on the Amiga
side.

Nancy,
if you have AmigaDOS 2.1 you have a built in method of reading IBM
compatible diskettes. Just drag the PC0 icon from the DosDrivers drawer
of the Storage drawer of Workbench to the DosDrivers drawer of the Devs
drawer of your Workbench. If not, either download MLDOS1.LHA from the
libraries here, or better yet, either update to AmigaDOS 2.1, or buy
CrossDOS.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, Brian — I guess I sort of knew that but really needed expert
corroboration. I'll be trying out the procedure very soon.

Download to your notebook, using a 720K disk. Then, put that disk into
your Amiga drive and use CrossDOS to read it to the Amiga. Simple as can
be. If you have 2.1 or later OS, CrossDOS is built into your system. If
not, CrossDOS can be purchased for about $25-30 from almost any dealer.

Thanks, Betty — I do have 2.1 and CrossDos, so I'll give it a whirl very soon.
Really appreciate your help.
