#NEC 3Xe CD-ROM Drive

Is anyone using the new NEC 3Xe CD-ROM drive on their Amiga? If so how good is
it and what did you have to do to get it to work etc..

I own the NEC 3Xi, which is the internal version of the 3X. It works fine
for me on my A1000 with a C Ltd. SCSI controller and AmigaDOS 2.1.
First of all you need a SCSI controller with driver software supporting
the HD_SCSICMD (sometimes called SCSI-DIRECT). Most current drivers do,
but I had to modify my ancient C Ltd. software (BTW if anyone is
interested, they can have my modifications).
Next you will need software which makes the CD-ROM filesystem look like
the Amiga file system. There are commercial packages available, but I
downloaded the AMICD.LHA file from this forum, and it works fine for me.

Harold: I'm using the NEC 3Xi drive, the internal version, and like it
just fine. It's fast, handles Photo CD's very well, and has all of the
audio controls on the drive itself so you don't have to rely on software
for playing normal audio CD's. I'm now using the AmiCDROM driver
(available here as AMICD.LHA) because it's the only driver that I'm aware
of that will handle the dual format (MAC & PC) CD's that are appearing on
the market.

Donot forget AsimCDFS v2.0. This commercial program also handles CD-ROMs
that are in IBM and MAC formats. It also handles XA-compatible/ready
CD-ROM drives. Reads and converts Kodak CD-ROMs to IFF.
