Hello, within the last day we got a very strange problem using mesh-files in 3DS. Some vertices have been put to the construction planes after the following operations: Select/Deselect, Freeze/Thaw, Rendering. The geometry was totally damaged so that we couldn't use the mesh any more. First I thought this was due to the import of the DXF-ile, but it occured also with mesh-objects made in 3DS. The bug(??!) could be described as if some selected vertices were manipulated with Modify/vertex/Align. Do you have an idea, what had happened?? I would apreciate each hint!

Rainer, it sounds like the 3DS.EXE that you're using has been corrupted in some way. If the program has been patched or modified (by a virus, for instance), the data structures will destablize to the point in which many things like that might happen. I recommend that you just re-install the program from the master disks (after checking to make sure you don't have a virus problem). After that, you'll be fine. – G

I have had a similiar problem importing dxf files from ame solids. The mesh is distorted as Mr. Geyer describes. I then tried importing it to 3ds2 and it translated perfectly. I then saved it as a prj file and opened it in R3, no problem. I do believe there is a bug in the translator in R3. I have reinstalled the program twice and get the same results.

The dxf translation code in r3 is virtually idential to the import code in r2. If you've got a file that you're having a problem with, zip it up and send it to me via email and we'll take a look at it. Rainer's problem, however, has nothing to do with dxf import (note his comment about how "it also occured with mesh objects made in 3DS").

regarding dxf import problems. i have also had problems importing dxf files (both ame solids and extruded polylines from acad). this has happened with several different meshes, and in each case the dxf file read into release 2 flawlessly. while i am opening my big mouth, have there been any incremental releases of 3dsr3. i have a few copies of the initial release and have experienced a few bugs. i am not one to complain, i use 3ds everyday and love it. just wanted to stay up to date. p.s. is there a way to rotate objects in increments less than one degree in the keyframer? I'd like to see examples of those. Re your 2nd question… the current shipping version of 3DS is 3.0. Re 3rd question… min rotations are 1 degree. – G

Gary, >> Re 3rd question… min rotations are 1 degree. << Can't you enter values of less than 1 degree in the key info dialog? I just did and it seemed to work. I rotated an object 1 degree with the mouse and then altered the 1.0 value in the keyinfo dialog to 0.5 and it seemed to have worked.

Jerry, >> p.s. is there a way to rotate objects in increments less than one degree in the keyframer? << try typing a value in the keyinfo dialog for a rotation key you created with the mouse. Seems to work to me.

Jerry, You can rotate things very accurately be adjusting their Rotation key value in the Keyframer. Keys let you get at 3DS's inherent accuracy that, for some reason, is not easily accessed in most other commands <g>. – Phil

<zip it up and send it to me via email and we'll take a look at it.> It is a rather large model, let me see if I can recreate a small portion of it that I am having trouble with. If not, I'll send you the whole thing. Look for chrisa.zip in the next few days.
