John <It is a 64bit architecture accelerator that blows away any TIGA ever made, and is probably cheaper.> Hadn't heard of that architecture. anybody else using it? <I own an MGA and think it's the best!!!!!!!!!! (I love it <g>).> … Well theres a ringing endorsement if there ever was one… it looks like I gotta unload my viper somwhere and get an MGA.

One point of warning on the MGA series: Vibrant will not have 3DS driver support for at least one more month. It is their highest priority, though, to get it done right. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

John, Does that mean it won't work at all? or just not at its full potential. How bout windows and NT? does it have and generic or Vesa vga capbilities ? Regards ,Peter Kroko

The MGA and MGA II both suppport VESA, but the MGA Impression (high-end) series have horrible VGA chipsets – veeery slow and tough to use in 3DS. The MGA II apparently has a faster VGA chipset, so that shouldn't be a problem. The MGA high-end cards have 3D hardware for 3d dynaview in AutoCad, and the MGA II don't. In windows there is no faster card in production that I know of at the moment, and the MGA Impression won the BYTE graphics accelerators review for CAD cards. It came in second in DTP next to the less expensive SuperMac, although the Matrox was faster. The MGA II is supposedly faster in windows than the MGA. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

Peter: No. The Viper will work with 3DS R3 right now but you should use the VIBCFG command line option to change the driver assigned for the materials-display and the render-display. Here's what I've got working now: Main-Display: Diamond Viper P9000 640x480x16 Materials-Display: VESA Compatibles 640x480x256 Render-Display: VESA Compatibles 640x480x256 And you need to load the VESA driver (VPRMODE VESA) before loading 3DS. There are lots of other combinations that undoubtedly work as well. The main thing is that the Viper won't run 3DS in native Diamond Viper P9000 mode at any resolution higher than 320×200 if you've got a color depth higher than 16 colors. That is supposed to be corrected by Vibrant with the new driver. David

Hey David, Hows it goin… <<Here's what I've got working now: Main-Display: Diamond Viper P9000 640x480x16 Materials-Display: VESA Compatibles 640x480x256 Render-Display: VESA Compatibles 640x480x256>> Yikes, pretty far from the 24x1024x768 I'm getting with my old TIGA (don't laugh) Opta Mona Lisa. My images are mainly still and pretty detailed so I like res and color … anyway… Regards, Peter Kroko P.S. Did you catch a peek of my stuff?

Peter: Did I catch a peek of your stuff? You bet I did. The mice were great. I made two sets of slides, sent one to Eugene and kept the second for myself. You will probably hear from someone down there about using some images in the magazine. I generally run 3DS at that resolution and then save targa files at higher res. No point of looking at everything that high all the time though and I don't do a whole lot of 3DS work anyway. I'm still pretty raw at it. <G> One of these days, when I get some free time (yeah, in what life), I need to really learn how to use it. David

Peter, >> my old TIGA (don't laugh) Opta Mona Lisa.<< Hea … that card was great … when it worked. We carried them for a little bit … and we had about a 30% unsuccessful rate with them. The ones that worked though were great (for their time). Ang

Angelo, <<we had about a 30% unsuccessful rate with them.>> So thats why they went under? All the mags had rave reveiws and I thought it worked great so I could never understand why they went away. <<that card was great … when it worked.>> Mines qwerky as all get up but I quite like it …just never liked being stuck with products from defunkt companies. The nice thing is that it works with most standard TIGA II drivers and most programs got'em…. Which I think is a lot more than can be said for the emerging crop of cards despite there high performance. Regards, Peter Kroko
