#Best Tape 4 single frame

Hi John: I read the thread about the new EVO driver and I hope you
are the right person to ask these questions, I'm looking for Hi8
tapes and would like some help. I have tried SONY E6-120ME and SONY
P6-120HG Hi8 tapes. I need too know what type is the best to use for
SF transfer. I keep having glitches, I was told to use MP tapes but I
can only find MP in reg. 8mm. also when should I use BUFFER and DNR
modes on my EVO9650, I have read conflictiong statements on them. And
lastly I can't seem to get the new driver to stop turning off the
Buffer and Dnr setting,I tried the setting the cfg both ways.

Never use ME tape with an EVO-9650 it will DESTROY the heads!!!
Seriously, on the top of your EVO-9650 there is a warning to this effect!
The tape that is recommended is P6-30HMPX Sony Professional. The
problem with the Hi-8 format is that you do get drop-out. Glitches
are different, so if you mean glitches, we'll have to discuss this
further.
The EVO driver is set up to go into DNR mode on a still and Buffer
mode when recording. I don't know if you have the latest driver, but
the latest driver allows you to specify wether you want the buffer
mode or not. Typically you use the DNR mode for playing back and
Dynamic Tracking. Buffer is used for recording.

a posted a message. I only did on SF with the ME so I hope I did no damage. I
think I'll stick to MP tapes, now are shorter tapes better? I heard longer
tapes streatch too much.
And yes I have the new driver, I DL the file from here, and no mater what I set
it to it turns off both DNR and BUFFER(no lights light). I network render to my
hard drive and go
disk to tape from the keyframer. This is my weakest link in a near perfect set
up. My next purchase will be a PAR or and ILLPRO, and the PAR is looking better
all the time. On second thought a NEW YOST IPAS3 set is next on my list, I
can't wait! Well back to the problem at hand, any sugestions on getting the
driver to work right?

Rick,
I prefer the 30's because I find them more manageable. The 60's and the 30's
are both the same thickness. I do single pass on them. Hi-8 takes a lot of
abuse when recording frame by frame.
There is a newer driver than the one you have. Things changed very rapidly
recently with this driver as several enhancements were incorporated. Did you
delete you 3dsadi.cfg and re-run 3DS. Possibly, you are still using the old
setup even though you have the new driver. If it asks you about using the
"buffer" then its the latest release. Try that first, and if that doesn't work
let me know.

and I do delet the adi config file before I try it and still no lights, either
way all I can think of is that the deck is a 1993 and maybe they changed a few
things?

As I suspected, you have an older driver. The new one is 1.2 Maybe Jonas or
Nik can verify that its been uploaded into the Library. If not I can upload it
to you, but it would be better to get it from ADESK. If its an emergency, I'll
send you a copy.

The ADI configuration process should create a VTP-9650.SET file in
your DRIVERS directory. Call up this file in the 3DS text editor or
your favorite one and look at the last 3 or so lines. It appears
that sometimes the proper carriage return – line feed sequence isn't
inserted correctly. If you find this to be true, you can manually
insert an <enter> where each line should break. This should correct
that problem. Let me know if the problem still exists, and I'll try
to help you further. (I am not at my 3DS system now, so I can't check
on the exact syntax for you.)
I checked my set file and the line for use buffers says at the end
(no=0)nocfg please check on the proper syntax for me as I still can't
get it to work. Thanks
Richard, I see you're still having problems with the EVO. Did you get version
1.2?
I see you're still having problems. Do you have ver 1.2? Here is how

Glad you got it working. Try to get a hold of the new driver when you can
because it automatically builds the correct SET file.

The line for recording with BUFFERS on is "HDWR=1". I found that with version
1.1 the "TIME…HDWR…DIGI…" lines were all on the same line. When that
occured, the VTR would not use buffers. When I inserted the proper CR/LF
<hitting ENTER> at the end of each line, everything worked properly.

I lost my head after he danger danger message, and forgot to coment on the
glitches, they were on the ME recording so maybe the tape caused it. I have
used reg. 8mm MP with no problem at all and wanted to do some "real quality"
stuff on Hi8 but it seems I bought the wrong tape(glad I didn't order a box)
and when I looked at it I use real suprized, I thought Hi8 ment better
quality, OH well Render and learn, thanx for the good(evo saving)info I might
have frame by framed myself right out of a 70hour head.

Look for the P6-30HMPX (I think) tapes. They ARE Hi-8 and they ARE the MP type
that single frame recording requires. I also hear that Maxell offers a
guaranteed drop-out free tape.
