I am looking at hard disks and controllers for my Amiga 1000. I'm looking in Amiga World and notice good prices for SCSI drives, but can't tell which of the many SCSI boards are available for the 1000. I'd like something like Great Valley Products' SCSI boards for the 500 and 2000, with autoboot ROMs and DMA. Is anyone making a product with this description?

Michael, Cltd will shortly have available and autobooting, fast SCSI Host/Controller for the A1000. It should cost around $300.00 or so retail. Keep an eye on Abel Supply's price list where it will probably become available for about $200.00 or so (based on old pricing of the current model). I have used the original for over a year and it's a fine product. With the new model and the new software recently released, drive speeds will be quite satisfactory and compare well with other products for the A2000. The new Host/Controller coupled with an OMTI ST506 controller/adapter and Cltd's SCSIDOS 3.0, you should be able to expect speeds getting close to DMA. I have seen reports of read/writes approaching 300k bytes, but that is not confirmed by me nor admitted to by Cltd. I have the old hos, and Adaptec 4000A controller and an ST-251-1 Seagate drive. I get 170k reads and 45k writes on a 1/3 filled drive under normal operating situations. The OMTI controller is much faster than the Adaptec. If you are not inclined to roll your own, Cltd has complete subsystems at reasonable prices.
