Need 3d models
21 messages in this thread
I would like to build a 3D model library so that I could quickly generate
animations from "off the shelf" models. I have an immediate need for freight
locomotives and freight train cars (e.g. box cars, gondolas, hoppers, etc.).
But I would also like to get some of 18 wheeler rigs, heavy trucks,
construction equipment, roadside objects (signs, railroad crossing gates & etc,
telephone poles, tract houses, etc.
The ViewPoint models are excellent but too expensive for many of the animations
I would like to create.
Does anyone know of any sources for public domain models that I could get for
little or no expense.
Thanks — Steve
Hi Stephen, also, you may want to call Modern Medium , and ask about
their new product "Blocks and Materials". They are in Oregon, at
503-343-4281
What can you tell us about this new product?
Hi John,
well, there has'nt been any real official released information about it yet,
but here are the basics:
The new product is called "Blocks and Materials" and is a CDROM.
It is an incredible collection of about 500++ 3D models, and 400++ texture maps
in many different file formats each.
The models are pre-material defined, and when bitmaps are used, are already
assigned mapping coords. There are also material files which are completely
pre-linked to the CDROM resources.
It is pretty much a plug and play thing, and provides for the "Insert and
Render" idea.
The models are in many different file formats accomodating many different
applications, including:
3DS2 and 3DS3 (each specifically)
AutoVision
any inside AutoCAD renderer, such as AccuRender and BigD
ARE24
RenderStar
AutoCAD Rel 10 !
DXF
The models are of useful items found in design work of many different
disciplines. It is basically like a "block library".
Although the models are pre-material defined, everything is easily changed,
reassigned, or updated by users of all expertise levels.
Some of the main features of the model library, include many very detailed
automobiles, and "bitmap to 3d face" relationship objects, such as trees and
people. There are 3D people models as well. There is a little of everything in
it.
The trees are very high quality, and are completely pre-linked to texture and
opacity maps as well as map coords. The trees are some of the most advanced
stuff for 3DS users that I have ever seen.
The product should start shipping in Mid March, and will include a high quality
manual including color cards showing the models and materials. I hear that the
intro price for a few months will be $199. There should be some ads coming out
soon, as well as an official product information release in here.
Thanks for your interest. Let me know if you have other questions, or also try
calling Modern Medium at 503-343-4281.

Well, I've sent a couple complimentary Syndesis 3D-ROMs to Modern
Medium, I hope they have the courtesy to send me a copy of theirs,
too. Hmm… 500+ models, several useful formats, 400+ texture
maps… hey, that *does* sound like the Syndesis 3D-ROM!
Wow! This sounds like an amazing CD-ROM. Thanks for the info, Larry.
your welcome Gary. Yeah, I think you will like the product when you
see what we have done with the stuff. Thanks for the interest.
Who designed the 3D models, and how were the textures created?
Hi Steve,
regarding your questions; who made the 3d models and how were the
textures created ?
The 3d models aare a subset of a larger library developed by KETIV
Technologies. Most of them are drawn originally by award winning 3D
artist Dave Nilsen of KETIV.
As to "how" the textures were created. Well, we consider the actual
"how" to be completely secret and proprietary. I will say that the
highest quality tools that are available today, were utilized.
What information are you looking for specifically ? Perhaps, I can
give you more precise answers.
There are about 17,000 man-hours tied up in this $199 product.
Thanks for the interest.

>>There are about 17,000 man-hours tied up in this $199 product.
Larry,
It sounds like an incredible product.
Due to the wide range of quality of 3D models, I think some folks
may be a bit skeptical about the CD. I was, even though I saw your
list with all the great objects on it. I think that in order to judge it
better, you could list face counts or prepare a little brochure with
final renders and wireframe pictures (not unlike Viewpoint). I'm starting
to think I should get the CD, but I'm pretty conservative about
what I buy. Do you have a mailer?
Thanks,
Jim
Hi Jim,
Thanks for your questions and concerns regarding tthe new Blocks and Materials
CDROM.
I understand people being skeptical, as I am too most of the time. What will be
a pleasant surprise to most, is that the cd not only "sounds" like a great
product, but it actually is.
It is an nice collection of items and objects, but the integration with the
supported rendering or 3D product, such as 3D Studio is what makes it so good.
With items like trees for instance, the 3d geometry is very simple. But when
combined with the high quality bitmap and opacity work, and then absolutely
aligned to the polygons, what results is a fantastic looking tree that you just
merge into your scene model. No preparation work is necessary, unless you want
to adjust something like scale or material definitions.
Items like cars are not only high quality meshes, but are also "ready to
render".
I think people will like the product, find it useful, and find it an incredible
value.
There will be a mailer coming out soon, which shows a number of concepts about
the cd, including the quality of the models in a rendered image, in wireframe,
and an example of the documentation.
Also, as soon as the upload problems are cleared up in the Adesk forums, there
will be some images finding their way in here for people to take a look at.
Thanks again.

Yeah, that's worth a lot. The viewpoint stuff I've seen is just
the meshfiles. They don't even have smoothing groups assigned,
let alone textures.

That sounds pretty great.

That will be the key to getting your sales going. I want to make sure
I'm on that mailing list. I am already on the 3D Artist mailing list, if
you're buying that for your mailer. If not, let me know, and I'll send you
an E-mail with my business address.

That would be nice, but at the ridiculous rates CI$ charges, I have
no budget for downloading image files. Maybe in the not too distant
future we can transfer files via internet (my access there costs
about $0.33/hour). But for now, I won't download anything over
about 100k unless it's just essential.
Good luck on your sales, and I look forward to seeing your brochure.
Jim
Well, I guess I'd like more detailed info about what kinds of textures and
what types of objects are on the disc.
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply. didnt mean to offend you if I did.
There was an information file uploaded here yesterday called BMCD3D.TXT
It explains it pretty well. Also there is a message thread called "Blocks and
Materials" that has the same info.
After you take a look at that, please let me know if I can answer other
questions.
thanks

I have some 3D models I have packaged for sale in two sets.
Architectural Exterior and Architectural Interior. The Arch ext. set
has about 130 symbols ranging from the simple to the complex. The
Arch Int set has about 100 symbols in the same format.
The exterior set has an 18 wheeler and other vehicles but no
construction equiptment. Let me know if you require more info… a fax
number or address and I'll send you some info.
Please send more info on your models to…

Thanks,
I just checked my database and I found that I have sent you a copy of
these symbols already. These were mailed to you in November of 1993,
for a conference of the AIA in puerto rico. Did you get them? and
what did happen at the conference? Feedback would be very much
appreciated.
