#Commodore UPDATE
28 messages in this thread
Greetings,
A small information update that should please folks:
1. 1084S Monitors will be available again around March 15th.
2. 1942 Monitors will be available again around March 15th.
3. Amiga 1200s are going to be around for the foreseeable future.
(No date yet)
This information came to me by a birdie that recently met with Medhi Ali.
So, I guess that is a bit of good news.
If you missed the online conference last night with Jim Drew you
missed a very interesting one. We discussed the Emplant. Frankly I
didn't realize how versatile it really is. I don't even like Macs
and I am thinking of buying one.
I'll try to have the edited conference available later this week.
Mark your calendars for March 3rd. This is GVP!
Mark,
are you going to replace the Bandito? <WG>.

I hope not. I hate the Bandito. I at least try to give accurate
information. 😉
I do hope that anyone who reads my postings understand that some of it
is based on fact and some of it on my opinion of what took place in
various conversations that I have had. None of what I say should be
taken as gospell. Just trying to keep your online experience as
interesting as possible.
I want you to know that you made the right choice in spending your
online dollars here at CompuServe.
I didn't mean to imply anything derogatory by that comment.
Sorry. You are doing absolutely spectacular so far, keep it up!

Go spell yourself! :^}
BTW, did the Indy thing every materialize for you?

Wayne,
I keep asking sja for a built in spelling checker. Actually my
problem with spelling is more related to my typing speed (fast) vs.
how fast I think. They still don't match up. I leave it to the
reader to figure out which is faster; the typing or my mind. 🙂
I have an Indy on my desk right now. This machine is incrediably
nice. The Out of Box experience that comes with the Indy is quite
impressive.
What it needs is the killer application. I wish SGI would contact
SCALA. 🙂
Mark, Have you been in touch with the WaveFront people? THey have
some really impressive stuff for 3D/modelling with full dymamics in
and statistics out.
Wow – I loved those little FU asides to the camera! The ending was a
little disconcerting, though…
Is the information regarding the 1084S solid enough and public enough
that dealers are taking orders on them again or is that a few weeks
away? The other question is, is it true that the newer 1084S's have
the RGB/Composite switch on the back?
Wayne,
The 1084S as I understand it is the same 1084S monitor that was being
produced. This is the one that looks like the 1942 monitor.
I got this word from Commodore. Sounds pretty solid to me. The composite
switch is on the back.

Actually, it just occurred to me that I could possibbly just take
their switch from the back and, with some wire and a place to mountit
hack an installation on the front or even outside the box around
where I can easily flick it.
Yeah, Wayne, I checked with my dealer. The monitors made over the last 2
years all have the switch on the back. You will HAVE to get a used one.

Why not rewire the composite switch to a toggle switch on your console?
James,
I think you were targetting that to me. And yes, it just dawned on me 5
minutes ago that that is a doable thing. I'll have to go to an Amiga
dealer when they start to hit the showrooms to see what I have to work
with. Maybe I can even see one with the cover off (hope, hope).

Wayne,
just remember to be extremely cautious when working inside the monitor.
Some of them hold a hell of a charge for a LONG time. I know!
I saw a someones little green screwdriver go into melt-down once when they
got too close to the cap – Nice spark! So I'm REAL careful in there.

Karl,
Thanks for confirming that, and especially for the time frame. That gives
me something better to work with.
You need one of the old clunky-looking squared off ones, not one of
the nice rounded looking ones. Figures, huh? Actually, if you get
desperate, *I* have a couple I'm not using right now. One of them
has a broken hinge on the control access door, so it kind of sags
when it's closed. But since you're going to leave it open maybe you
wouldn't mind? It works fine other than that.
Karl,
I'm filing that info away. If the newer ones aren't an easy mod, I'll be
Cmailing ou about it. Thanks.

Pardon me for jumping in, but are you planning to use the
RGB/Composite switch to select from two sources ? You might have a
problem there if you plan to run with both sources switched on.
I have a very old 1084, its not even the stereo version, and I have
got my 500+ on the RGB input and my CD32 on the composite. This works
fine for the 500+ and for the CD32 if the 500+ is switched off. But
if I select composite while the 500+ is on the monitor can't seem to
sync with the CD32, so I just get a distorted and rolling version of
the CD32 picture. The setup is useable but I can't play CD32 games
while the 500+ is doing long compiles or renders like I'd hoped. This
may be an oddity of my setup (it is a very old monitor).
I wonder if that is a PAL problem, or maybe a CD32 problem? I used to have a
regular VCR video out in to my composite in, and switching the front switch
never gave me a bit of trouble…. still doesn't when I have a camcorder
connected.
Sounds like this is an oddity of my setup, I'll just have to put up with
it until I can afford a better monitor.
By the way, do you know if this "S-Video" thing that the CD32 has is
RGB ? If it is, can it be converted to Scart ? The composite input
is fine for games, but when I loaded Workbench from the Demos II CD
the text display was a bit fuzzy. If I ever do manage to convert the
CD32 into a computer I will be hoping for a better display.
Sorry, I can't say… I'm not that familiar with S-Video… although I believe
(don't quote me) that S-Video does provide the seperate RGB components.
Of course there are much wiser folks than myself floating around to answer
that! <g>
S-Video is the bw and color data separated out. Not quite as good as
RGB, but very close.
The SVHS output of the CD32 is what you call Y/C. The luminance signal is
seperated fron the Chroma signal. (color and brightness are seperated)
This provides for a higher resolution signal and less dot crawl.
Redmond cable may make a Y/C cable that has the small SVHS DIN plug on one
end and RCA phono jacks (like on the back of the 1084) on the other. This
would enable you get a clearer picture, but sill not as good as RGB. I'll
give Redmond a call and see if they have it.

I believe it can be converted to SCART.

Peter, I've got a 1080 with the RGB coming from the 23 pin port and
the Toaster preview going into the video. I switch between them all
the time with no problem at all. I need another monitor where I can
do the same thing. Unfortunately, the only current production one
that does that (and had the front swith) that I cna find is a Sony
GVM-13xx for about a Kbuck.
Peter,
I switched between CNN and Workbench for years with no problems. I'd
suspect the monitor has a crosstalk problem or the CD-32 can't cope.
