If you, like me are using your trusty 170x monitor with your amiga, I have news! First, the 5-pin jack to luma and Comp. to Chroma trick WORKS LIKE A CHARM!! Second, regardless of the position of the rear switch, BOTH audio jacks are ALWAYS ON. SO get 2 RCA cords, one connected to the rear Audio input and one to the front. No need to shell out $3 for a Y-connector.

Wayne….didn't I tell ya long ago that the 170x monitor was capable of perfectly good 80 cols if wired up using both the 5-pin to luma and the composite jack to chroma? A friend of mine who works on electronic gizmos at a hospital came over early during my Amiga adventures (3 mos ago or so) and said "hmmm…lets mess with these cords/connectors/plugs back here and see if we can get cleaner 80 cols…" and sure enough, through experimentation and persistance, we stumbled on that working combination. No, it's not a crystal clean razor sharp 80 cols with a solid pure background like you'd get with the 1080/1070, etc, but it's a cleaner 80 cols than I EVER say come out of a C64 into the monitor with or without hardware add on boards, etc. I usually run my preferences for term programs with black or very dar k gray text on a medium gray/lite gray background, with the standard orange cursor, and just flip the door on the 1701 down and crank down the color a bit, and it looks fantastic! The letters are MUCH sharper than the default white over blue! Anywhooo, this is a good way for someone (like me) who doesn't want to shuck out an additional $500 for an RGB tube to get perfectly decent video in 80 cols on the good ol' CBM 170x monitor. (And, arguments to the contrary, the 1701 is DEFINITELY a cleaner picture than the 1702!) Regds
