Kevin, The Amiga 2500 is not all that fast… The 2090A stil has the overscan problems and the 2620/2 is not that fast… I have a RONIN board with a 20Mhz 881 and no 32-bit RAM… I compaired my system to a 2500 and was not impressed!!! Here are my results… Amiga 2000 CMI Amiga 2500 RONIN. —————————————————————————–. Eckel benchmark 994 1223 1917 2198. CPU_Speed 1.00 1.03 1.73 1.89. SI Amiga 1.0 1.7 4.6 4.6. SI IBM 3.2 5.7 15.1 15.2. (the following, lower is better) Sieve 45.50sec 44.78sec 21.86sec 18.48sec. Savage.IEEE 46.86sec 1.76sec 1.52sec 1.26sec. RAM_Speed (chip) 29.20sec 28.60sec 24.27sec 20.60sec. RAM_Speed (fast) 29.20sec 28.50sec 24.27sec 20.50sec. I didn't believe the results!!! Even with 2MB of 32-bit ram the thing was slower than my RONIN board!!! I am still thinking about getting a 2500 though, simply because it is will be a standard and that the 2620 can still be booted with the 68000… If I did get the 2500, I would probably replace the hard drive and controller with the GVP one since the 2090A is VERY unreliable…

Yes, the 2620 is about 8% slower than the Ronin board. However, it is done _right_, with the 32 bit ram mapped into the 16 meg address space so that it is possible to DMA into and out of it. It is slower because of the MMU, most likely, and if you look to the future of the Amiga, I think you'll see that the MMU will play a large role. 2090A unreliable? Hardly! Let me know when GVP figures out SCSI and removes the MaxTransfer limitations.

Dear Larry- Funny that you should mention GVP and max transfer- I think I have a problem with this- I want to increase my Maxtrans but don't know how ? I used the installation software, which was quick, simple, and easy for nontechies like me, but I have been told that the subsequent problems I have with my drive are due to a low maxtrans number as set by GVP. Can you enlighten my at all on the subject

It's my understanding that the GVP will give you errors if the MaxTransfer is set too high, or not set at all. The GVP requires a low (or relatively low) MaxTransfer value in order to work properly. I have no direct experience with the GVP unit, but I'm sure a question on the Amigatech forum would draw a few answers for you.

Sorry about the 2090A problem… I had a 2090 and I HATE it!!! It had those problems with the read write errors… As I understand it now, the 2090A doesn't have that problem, except for a DPaintII slow-load problem I read about in Amazing Computing November issue… Anyway, I'mm seriously considering purchasing a 2500 now…

The read errors were corrected by the latest release of the driver (5 May 1988). The slowdown when using some programs is still not resolved as to what the real problem is. My testing seems to show that the programs themselves have a lot to do with it.

Do you know of a utility to get the MMU to cram Kickstart into 32 bit on a 2500? I'd be very interested to know if anyone out there has done one.

Dear Turbo Tim- Thank you for the benchmark results- I am having a heck of a time deciding what to go with now ! I do love my GVP card, and would be hard pressed to give it up. However, I have heard from one reliable source that the GVP hardcard and the 2500 are not extremely compatible- something about the GVP terminating the bus- that is not allowing the 2500 to read any cards to the left of the GVP card ! Moving the GVP to a different slot works, but the hardcard takes up two slots unless it is in the rightmost slot ! Has anyone else heard of this, or is this an isolated incident? BTW, have you run any Turbo Silver speed tests with Ronin vs CBM ? I must admit that realworld numbers (i,e. the Sculpt3D coffee cup) on 68020/68881 stuff makes more sense to this nontechie hacker !:-) And whats the difference between a 68881 and a 68882 besides MHz ? or is it just speed
