I've made my own decision about locks.
I've put up with the 3DS lock. I turned down liquid speed because of its lock,
I ordered RAYMAN, in spite of the lock. Now I will have TWO locks hanging
awkwardly from the back of the PC. I will need a cable or string hanging from
the ceiling to support more locks plus the line printer cable, hence, I will
simply buy
NO MORE SOFTWARE WITH LOCKS, nor will I recommend it! If that begins to cause
a limitation, which it has (no liquid speed), I will investigate alternative
new products.
With OpenGL (Graphics Library) for Windows-NT, more developers are able to
conveniently write their own 3D programs, including myself. There will be more
products competing in the coming years for sure.
I think many "lock wishes" will come true eventually by default!

often require you to redirect your parallel ports in order to share another
computer's printer. When the software looks for the hardware lock, guess what?
It gets lost. The 3D Studio doccumentation suggests that you only run
3D Studio when the network is not running. GREAT IDEA!! Just work when no one
else is.

That is surprising. We run CorStream Server (Lantastic & Novell) and all 3
parallel ports are redirected to a HP 650C, a HP LaserJet IV, and a QMS
PostScript. I have 11 (count 'em) hardware locks hanging off LPT1, and haven't
had any problems with any of them. I believe that 3D Studio makes it's calls
for the lock at an address level, not just LPT1, (like AutoCAD does), so will
always find it.
That's nice to hear. I've been wanting to move our printer off of my machine
but have been afraid to because of the warnings in the 3d studio manual. I
wanted to be pretty sure it would work before drilling new holes in the
partitions and re-routing cables.
I also have LPT1 captured under Novell 3.12 and have no problems with 3DS
finding the hardware lock.
