I recently bought a MIDI interface from a company in Tallahassee, FL called
Educational Computing; it works very well with Music Studio. For $59 you get
a nice looking box than plugs into the Amiga's RS-232 port, and has
switchable pass-through for modems etc. Now I'm interested in writing a patch
librarian for the Casio CZ-101. Has anyone here done anything with MIDI
communication routines? (Preferably something I can call from BASIC.) Or
better, has anyone here written a patch librarian?
I'm working on a CZ-101 patch librarian now. Tonight I got the CZ to output
it's tone data, and collected it in an array. Now all that's needed is a
user interface ("its JUST software…"). I'm working in 'C' because I'm not
sure basic can keep up with the MIDI rates (31250 BAUD), though since data
can be kept to 257 bytes, this might not be a real problem. If you want to
head that way, you need a document from CASIO: "Guidebook for MIDI" that
details the codes and formats for the interchange. They'll send it free if
you ask. The phone no. is (201) 882-1493.
My first attempt will just be to save the data, but ultimately I want to
display it all and allow you to diddle it with the mouse. (Should be easier
than with the up-down buttons on the synth.). HOWEVER, the codes sent out
bear only minor resemblance to the codes displayed in the machine. You'd
think that a setup that could go 0-99 would come out in binary 0-99, or with
some offset. NO! It comes out in three bytes (a nybble at a time) in a
peculiar code. Bottom line is that that part is gonna take awhile. Let me
know what you're up to, and I'll do the same.
I am hoping to write a librarian for the Yamaha DX27/100. I'm planning to use
Basic since I don't have C. My biggest problem is figuring out how to access
the MiDI interface from BASIC. I can't seem to get basic to open a file to
the serial port (book example doesn't work) and even if I could I'm not sure
I can just output To MIDI through the serial port. ANy advice, hints or words
of wisdom would be appreciated. The Yamaha manual DOES have complete MIDI
info, and the implementation is very straightforward. No messing around with
three nibbles per byte. I could use info on how the MIDI interface convert
RS232 data to MIDI format (# of bits, parity, stop bits, Baud). If Basic
won't support 32,500 BAUD for MIDI, then it might be done through DOS calls.
If someone has or waNts to write a subroutine to transmit a string to MIDI
from BASIC it would probably help everyone out (Me Especially!!!) Hope to
