Saw your questions and thought I'd throw in my two cents worth. I just bought the Mimetics Sound Sampler and am still fooling around with it. Although the literature says that the sample rates can be changed, I have yet to figure it out. It does, however, work very well on digitizing, and I have to admit I haven't got into the music end of any of this. I have a lot of questions too, that I am trying to get answered on CIS, PLINK, and BIX about some kind of standards as to sampling rates (maybe!) and I, being a telecom eng., would like to know if anyone has any ideas as to some form of companding to make this thing not eat up memory like its going out of style! The Memetics will sample up to your maximum memory you have on your machine (although I don't know if having more than 512K will be seen by the software) But it helps to be having nothing else running while your digitizing, that was around 20 seconds is available. But at an 18K per second sampling rate it takes a HUGE chunk of disk space to save it. I would think that if some people with some smarts out there im programming (definately not me!) were to get together with some people with digital telecom experience (me or others), we could get the sampling rate down to 3K or better with a really good companding system that would give good s/n and distortion figures, and fair enoungh frequency response. Any ideas out there? ?

So you have the Mimetics. Is it a stereo digitizer as claimed, and in what sense (i.e. can you digitize the 2 channels together?) And can you save those 20 secs. as IFF. I heard that although it claims to be IFF, you can't save regular speech as IFF, only two secs. worth of a musical instrument. Is this true?

Some answers to your questions, I hope! It is not, repeat, not, stereo, although it has two (right and left) line level inputs. It sums them in the circuitry. There is one mini-phone [A input for a microphone. No, the files are not saved in IFF format, but both 'sound' and 'newsound' will play them, with a period of around 200. What I would like to see is a program that would IFF the file and chop it down to size! Some 6 seconds of the last radio xmission from the Challanger took over 90K! So much for that, talk to you later!

A friend of mine just bought the Mimetics, too. (All things that I was told here considered, I would have suggested the FutereSound.) At any rate, he tells me that in the back there is a spec sheet on the sampler. It says "Available in Stereo or Mono." What gives? Are there two versions? Fadi

There aren't two versions of the Mimetics sampling device — all are stereo but the documentation is in error. I work fairly closely with the people there as I'm a freelance writer, and I'm sure that's what the deal is.

What do you mean by "all are in stereo?" My friend who just bought one said that the software supplied with it allows only for one track recording and one track playback. How do you figure that?
