When you said (in June 'A.C.') that you are trying to break through to Unix on the Well did you mean that you haven't been able to access Unix at all, or just in some specific way? You can most easily enter Unix 'mode' by typing !sh to start a Unix shell. To leave Unix, you type a ctrl-D. Have you used Usenet's rn (readnews) command yet to keep up with various Amiga chit-chat? Perhaps I can help you with that as well, but I had the feeling you were already an experienced Usenetter. >>> brent

I know Unix quite well, but it's the top layer of the Well that stifles me. I hate memorizing N different command sets for N networks. For a while, I swear it wasn't updating my Amiga conference .xxrc or whatever, and I'd have to read everything over again, and CTRL/O out of each thread. What I really need for the Well is a good set of .rc files that will set me up to tour the Amiga conference, and not leave me in that stupid conferencing software. (I must confess, Compuserve's message base structure is the best I've seen on a major network, in that I can usually read what I want in a reasonable fashion. The biggest problem is the fast message base roll-over. It forces you to spend money, often and early.) I've used the shell escapes. My biggest problem is that I am used to a crafted and hacked 4.3 BSD that ran on UW-Madison's university VAXen. What version is the Well running? 4.3 I bet, huh? 🙂 I downloaded the giant Well manual, and printed it, but what I need is more time, and less 100 page manuals, and some nice .rc files.

Yeah, I agree with what you're saying about the Well's conferencing sw (NETI). I haven't found a way yet to read just selected entries from a topic. I'd swear I've been told there's a way, but I can't figure it out from the help online… I have to agree that CIS' message base is the most efficient for me, too. Once you know the simple commands, you can breeze in and out. Of course it still amounts to at least an hour of download time @ 1200 baud if you want to read a week's worth of msgs! Don't know much about the Well's Unix, but I didn't think it was 4.3. Have to check on that. See you on the Well, John… >>> Brent
