Has he checked into the possibility of a souped up 2000 with a 2060 coprocessor board. 16MHz 68020/68881/68851 all ready for Amiga Unix. That is some heavy duty power. With 32 bit memory this configuration has been benchmarked in the neighborhood of a VAX 8650/8600 (68881 mathlib, 68020 cache enabled). A slightly better performance can be tweaked by replacing the 68881 with a 68882. The 68882 is a faster version (about 2X) of the 68881 with some enchancements. However it is compatible (electrically and software) with the 68881. The 68851 is a Memory Management Unit, basically waiting for Amiga UNIX. So maybe your friend would be interested in an Amiga UNIX box for around $5000. (Rough guess by me.) Also, supposedly Amiga UNIX will have the ability to run AmigaDOS as one it's tasks. (Hmmm, a multitasking task…) At this point this discussion belongs in rumors rather than Modula-2. However, the 2060 board is real and Amiga UNIX will be. Anyways, that should give you some ammunition for your friend. If you want there is a review of the 2060 board in last months Amazing Computing. I can relay what rumors (fairly substantial) I've heard on BITNET (where of course it was a popular topic this spring). Thanx, Mark

thanks for the note, I'd missed some of that stuff. However raw (integer in this case) CPU is not the only is, there are display issues too and a UK Government spec that runs to 100+ pages. The Amiga isn't really in that market yet at a credible, supportable level, much though I hate to say it. What I have done makes him think but he is making hardware choices I agree with for the application.
