#Pentium & Imagine
3 messages in this thread
Hi,
I just received Imagine 3.0 and I have a couple quick questions.
First, was Imagine 3.0 compiled to take advantage of the Pentiums dual pipeline
processing? Or will it take advantage of the Pentiums feature to increase
rendering?
Also will Imagine 3.0 be affected by the P90 fpu bug?
Mr. Payton
Our system and the way it renders does not have to be compiled as you
suggest, it rips on the pentium,
Now as for the bug, I suppose it is possible that it could show up, but
as of yet, we have several pentiums in house, we have not seen and record of
this happening nor do I think that it will. We are checking into things to see
if there is a problem, if there is one, you will, if you sent in your warranty
card get a newsletter that will discuss this issue, if indeed it is an issue.
BTW if you bought Imagine from us directly then you are on the list and will
not have to worry about a warranty card.
Enjoy Imagine and your new Pentium and dont put tooo much concern in to
the possible problems with the CPU, I doubt that it will come up anytime soon.

PMFJI, but re: pentium bug:
I've rendered about 10,000 frames on a P5 in the last six months or so, and
have not seen any evidence that Imagine is affected by the FDIV bug in the
Pentium chip. I frequent the Dell user group, and am amazed at the way people
are freaking out about this problem. Somebody came up with two seven digit
numbers that, when divided and successively multiplied, came up with a wrong
answer; the whole forum seemed to blow a collective gasket. I did some tests
myself to try and find a number combination that would fail, and after a day or
so of searching (and you can search a LOT of numbers on a P5-90) I gave up. I
think Intel's "once in 27,000 years" comment is a bit irresponsible, but IMHO
the Pentium FDIV bug shouldn't affect Imagine in any significant (or
detectable) way, if at all.
