#ER Demo Problems

I just downloaded the ER for Windows demo. 9 times out of 10 I get a GROWSTUB error when I start ER. Sometimes I can choose Ignore, the program will start normally, other times, Ignore won't work, so I choose Close. After choosing Close, I get a GPF has occurred in GROWSTUB in POINTER.DLL @ 0001:0F64. Another problem I am having is when I go to Output Options, and choose Full Frame Uncompressed as my Parameters for VFW, and immediately go back to Parameters to check that it has been saved, I see No Recompression as if that was the one I choose. In short does the Demo version not allow Full Frame Output? I am using a 486/66, 20MB, 20MB SWP FILE, WFW 3.11 (all 32-bit enabled), DOS 6.22. Please let me know what's going on, so I can buy a copy without worry. Thanks, Steve

Steven. The problem lies in the version of the Microsoft mouse driver you are using. You need to get the new POINTER.DLL which will update your mouse driver to 9.01b. I havent been able to find it on CIS, but you can download the following file from the Microsoft BBS and it will (should) solve all your problems. HD1061.EXE MS-BBS: 206-936-6735 Hope this helps! Hurrah! I have been having exactly the same problem in Photoshop! I'm going to suck down the new pointer right now. ..mark

Mark, The common denominator is that both of these apps are Win32 apps. You may notice certain functions, like snap to and mouse growth disabled when running these apps but it will clear up your problem.

Steven, The problem arises from your Mouse… This is from a program I run, readme file Problem: "General Protection Fault caused by GROWSTUB in POINTER.DLL" Explanation: This is caused by a Microsoft mouse driver version 9.01 GROWSTUB component. Solution: One of the three suggestions should correct the problem. 1. Remove POINTER.EXE from the load= line in the file WIN.INI and then restart Windows. 2. Download the file HD1061.EXE from the Microsoft BBS at (206) 936-6735. This file is self-extracting. Run "HD1061" and follow the instructions in the newly created README.TXT file. 3. Upgrade to the Microsoft Mouse IntelliPoint software version 1.0. For information about obtaining this upgrade, call the Microsoft Sales Information Center at (800) 426-9400. There is a charge for this upgrade. Bruce Herzog Graphics Forum Staff NY 03-Dec-94 at 6:05p DST

Just a note of reenforcement, the GROWSTUB error is caused by a Win32s incompatabilites with certain versions of the Microsoft Mouse driver. If needed, there should be a section in the demo readme and in the demo help in the demo and in our vendor library. Chris Edgin ERI Tech.

I have the new mouse and it's great…has sound effects, too. The drivers are supposed to be better than 9.0 or 9.01 I think they are 10.0 not 1.0 as the readme file in the game states. Bruce

Hi, I cannot install the demo. I get either a "Insufficient Memory or Disk space" or a obscure GPF like error in _MSSETUP.DLL. The error happens on both Pentium systems we have here. This is under WFWG 3.1. Each system has 32 meg and at least 44 meg HD space free. No other applications are running. Novell Network is installed. PCI graphics card. I tried it with generic VGA too. And without the Net. The install is from disk as specified in the windemo.txt file. Any help is gabbaloocious! Brian

How much conventional (DOS) memory do you have available before & after starting Windows. Chris Edgin ERI Tech.

First time I had about 430 K, Got rid of CDROM driver and network and tried it with 620K. This also fails under Win95 the same way on a 486-66. I'll try it under NT on a Pentium. Maybe my install disk is mucked up? Thanks Brian

Tried it under NT same failure. I rebuilt disk1 as it did show errors (may be caused by the install failure?). Still won't go.

It is poccible that the demo archive or its contents got messed up. Keep in mid that those files are not designed to be install off of hard disk. If you still have problems, you might want to give our sales dept. at (608)273-9240 to get our Demo CD or disks. Chris Edgin ERI Tech.

Its possible, although I thought if it decompresses OK the archive is OK. I used "erwdemo -d". Thanks
