My reply is quite different from the rest of the responses you have received on
this forum. My strategy would be NOT to consider production equipment and
concentrate on the actual productions. I have seen people having to change
their plans due to equipment limitations. The point here, there are several
ways to "buy" the services you need for each title you are producing, build the
IRS approved EXPENSE against the project and you are done. I'd be glad to speak
with you over the telephone. I located in Maryland and can arrange to give you
my telephone number. I am Producer/Director that has been on the client side of
the desk (while working for IBM), and a self employed person for almost 15. I
own equipment now, but also buy the services that I need, AS NEEDED. It makes
for greater ability to focus on the project at hand. (Let's see how many folks
disagree with this approach).

Most artists probably want to own their equipment for the intimacy that brings
about whether its computers, video, or painting or whatever expression they are
connecting with their lives. A producer/director may be an artist of a
different sort, whose medium is within him or herself, and that art may be more
on the conceptual or overall visualization level. What I am getting at is
perhaps the difference between an orchestra condutor and those in the
orchestra. So I do not disagree with your approach, but would only see it as a
diffence in kind.
