Most artists probably want to own their equipment for the intimacy that brings about whether its computers, video, or painting or whatever expression they are connecting with their lives. A producer/director may be an artist of a different sort, whose medium is within him or herself, and that art may be more on the conceptual or overall visualization level. What I am getting at is perhaps the difference between an orchestra condutor and those in the orchestra. So I do not disagree with your approach, but would only see it as a diffence in kind.
