#JPEG size changes…
9 messages in this thread
Hi,
We just ran out of space and decided to give JPEG a try on a long animation
run. Funny thing is that about 1/3 of the files are about 1/4 the size of the
rest: 50k vs 200k. We are rendering the project on four machines, and I
haven't looked to see if there is one machine in particular that is packing
them smaller, but I have do wonder why this might be happening?
Thanks,
Donald

Eeek! That may not be so funny when you find out the reason why! Check to make
sure the compression level on all four machines is the same!!!
That could definitely account for it. I hope that's not the case!

John,
I'm pretty sure that the compression level is the same on all the machines but
I'll sure check… (I've had no reason to change it!) It makes me wonder if
the compression level dialogue when net rendering JPEG files is just a
formality…. (sigh!)
Well, as soon as we get NDUMP up and some more storage on line, we'll be back
to rendering TGAs anyhow!

Are you saving off .jpg's to later process as .tga's to become .ani's for
the PAR? Double compression supposedly looks pretty lousy. Just wonderin'.
Paul S.
Yup, we were JPEGing to re-compress in PAR — it was the only thing we could do
— lots of frames, little time, little space…

John's suggestion about the JPEG compression level is the most relevant issue
to look at. Other than that, the differences might have to do with what's
going on with the scene at those specific frames (if the scen is changing
radically enough).

Gary,
!!!False Alarm!!!
I'm not sure what I was seeing anymore…<bg> There may have been same-named
files from a previous render in the same dir… but I coulda' swore I checked
the names and dates!?!
Thanks,
Donald

Better that than a fire. <G> Its always a scramble with new equipment etc. Glad
you aren't having _real_ problems. 🙂

John,
<Better that than a fire>
This hardware installation hell has just given me a short fuse! It would be
kinda nice to have a "real problem", like a regular problem that has a "real
solution"… I was really hoping that y'all would jump back at me in chorus
with a one line fix!
