I'm running 3DS4 with a couple of large models of some new construction we are supposed to be doing at work. My animation system has 32 MB of RAM, and rendering often uses all of it and sometimes up to 18 MB or so of swap space. Once in a while (usually the second time I render the full model) my system gives me a parity error, but the location that it reports is blank. I've seen some reference to such a problem with 3DS4. I would appreciate it if somebody could bring me up to speed on the current thinking on this problem. Chris – Chris Johnston, Written 02-Feb-1995 @ 23:41:56 Using: Windows NavCIS PRO 1.25

Parity error? That's a memory problem, not a software problem. It's impossible for 3DS to generate parity errors, but it can surely be stopped by one in the hardware. You might want to run some diagnostics on your memory. – G

I asked because it looks to me to be a bogus error – there is no address shown on the message, and I've seen programs that generate bogus parity errors (or actually, end up in the BIOS, generating a bogus parity message.) I am more suspicious of a memory mapping problem than bad memory, but I'm planning on running my disgnostics on it anyway. I was just wondering if you knew of anything that would cause a memory addressing leak on 3DS fpr big models that use a lot of swap space. If you're using a LOT of swap space, then your system has to be extremely compliant with Phar Lap. Little hiccups could easily generate errors like that, and it could be anything from bad RAM, to a memory mapping problem, to a HD controller problem. Good luck figuring it out. – G

Thanks! I've been doing memory tests and haven't found anything so far, so it is quite possible that it is either a mapping or controller problem. I've tried to swap up to a 64 MB system, but I haven't been able to get anybody to pay for it yet! <g> The problem seems to occur on the second rendering when I've got my full building model unhidden. I'm using all of my 32MB of ram and 16-20 MB of swap space. Thanks for the advice. Chris – Chris Johnston, Written 07-Feb-1995 @ 21:14:19 Using: Windows NavCIS PRO 1.25
