#PAR 1.30/1.50 Help…..

I have the following problems, using the PAR for PAL (without TBCIV):
Together with the card came PAR (PAL) software version 1.30B.
Parinit and Pardrv caused no problems, but par.exe could not recognize
all of the DOS drives first, so I downloaded version 1.50 (NTSC +
PAL) from DPS BBS. Two problems remain:
– The DOS Window in ver. 1.50 is not accesible, no directories are shown.
– The mouse + system hang from time to time.
– Ver. 1.30B runs ok in the mean time. But looks up occasionally as well.
– When I look at the color bar *.stl I downloaded from DPS BBS, the lower left
corner of the screen is somehow dirty and the "dirt" starts growing, changing
colors (looks like a slowly growing "fire"….)? If this has something to do
with adjusting luminance, how can I do this (without TBCIV) ???
Any suggestions for my problems are much appreciated!

That growing 'fire' problem sounds like something I noticed while
testing the PAL mode of a piece of equipment we have at work. It
turned out to just be a problem in the monitor, and giving the
monitor external sync cleared it up. Have you tried hooking the
PAR's output directly to a different monitor or to a waveform
monitor?

Thanks for your answer to my problem. What I discovered in the mean time:
This dirty spot I have on the corner is less strong when I let the signal first
pass my SVHS recorder and it does not grow any more. Maybe one thing that could
help to find out what it is: the "dirty spot" inverses the colors: so, on a red
bar the spot turns into green. The picutre is clean otherwise, the boarders
between the colors not very crisp though (especially between the green and cyan
bar is a kind of dark stripe).
The monitor seems ok otherwise. The problem here is: I have no waveform
monitor, nor an external sync <sigh>…
A further question: _if_ I had the TBC capture board, this would not help me to
"clean" the PARs output signal, right?

By going through a deck you are filtering the signal and probably (in the case
of most commercially available decks) passing it through an auto gain control
too. This would provide some clipping of levels that are too high. Stable test
patterns often show problems in equipment that are blurred and made invisible
to the eye in moving images. Have you tried recording the problem image on
videotape and playing it back on someone else's deck? If the problem is with
the PAR, this would be a handy thing to show a technician from where you bought
the board.

Good ideas tend to be simple… I'll do that. Thanks.
In the mean time I'll try to find someone with a wavefrom monitor. There are
still some basic problems to solve anyway….

How are your DOS drives cennected, because I had not one problem 1.33b software
exept the backup problem 896+ frames.
I did not even have a problem with the 1.29 software exept the one above and
the then known PRJ directory deletion problem.
1. BTW do not forget to choose the FILES button after selecting a drive,
otherwise you will not see anything, + also look at the extension *.* ???
2. Mouse hangs, all I know is that moving through a series of TGA files can be
a hasle difficult.
3. Lock up of your system, never had that, how is your system configured,
meaning what is active at the time PAR EXE starts???
Maybe upload your autoexec, config etc…
One thing I did was remove all PAR mentioning from those and start PAR via
seperate batch file, since I do not always need PAR when starting PAR.
The colorbars problem, seems to be monitor related, to which monitor do you
export???
Maybe try to export to your VCR or normal TV that might show it all. Also I had
a problem with colorbleeding but it was caused as I discovered by placing my
VCR in max. sharpness level, placing it at medium solved this.
BTW what is your opinion so far??? It is a great tool, I will be completing a
demo tape in 2 months I think, already have plenty of stuff.

– About the locking of the mouse and hanging of the system in the PAR window:
it happens still from time to time. I have to check the mouse installation
again I guess, because if I move the mouse while PAR.EXE is loading, mouse and
system hang.
– The DOS Window runs ok now with version 1.50 – no idea what made it run. It
poped up several times before without _any_ files or directories in the DOS
window….
– The "dirty spot" in the color bar is not that bad when I go through my SVHS
VTR first but is still there. BTW, I have a TV with SVHS input to check my
signals. Did you download the PAL color bars stills from DPS BBS yet? How do
they look on your system…?
I'm going to test those sharpness levels you talked about right now.
