Dear Timothy: I run an Authorized AutoDesk Training Center in Tulsa, OK. Star Training Institute. We also have a CAD and Drafting school. One thing is clear for the future of Drafting and Design, it will involve more and more use of computers. An an instructor in a high school program, I think it is important to develop visualization skills. These are taught in high school drafting classes. Orthographic Projection, section views, auxiliary views, axonometric views, etc. For these classes to be meaningful, they must include the use of CAD. CAD is a tool for the drafter. It will nor replace drafting. The problem lies in how can you get funding for equipment, and software to allow you to offer a credible program. I understand this is a monumentous problem, but it must be overcome. All public schools seem to be moving in the direction of finding funds for this equipment. One idea would be to offer classes involving AutoCAD LT, which is runs on a less expensive machine, and is easier to understand and teach. I would think your site management team would need to come up with some ideas to enhance programs such as theses so that they are so interesting, students want to enroll in them. I feel forcing students to go to your local Vo-Tech is not a prudent decision to make for your students. These are just my ideas. My ideas, and 10 cents might buy you a cup of coffee. Regards,
